Just wanted to share, as I was reminded on another post!
The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight in Southern Illinois, offering up to 50 to 100 shooting stars per hour.
Optimal viewing occurs from 11:00 PM until dawn, with the absolute best rates in the dark predawn hours under favorable new moon sky conditions.
Astronomical viewing conditions are mathematically perfect because tonight aligns with a new moon. The sky will be completely dark, allowing observers under ideal conditions to spot 50 to 100 meteors per hour, including bright fireballs.
However, localized regional storms and incoming clouds moving through Illinois tonight may partially block the view.
Viewing Timeline & Coordinates10:00 p.m. – Midnight: Meteors will start appearing in lower numbers.
Midnight – 4:00 a.m. (Peak): The optimal viewing window as the earth rotates directly into the comet debris cloud.
Where to Look: Face toward the northeast sky near the constellation Perseus, though meteors can streak across any part of the sky.
