The Bismuth Business

The Bismuth Business I create high-quality home-grown Bismuth crystals for use as jewelry, home decor, or part of your spiritual / element-mineral collection.

Bismuth crystals are a unique gift for someone who appreciates the beautiful and the weird.

Just pulled this monster out of the cooling vessel 😁. I couldn't be more happy to see a formation like this. Normally I'll either get small crystals, or large circular geode crystals, but every so often I can time it perfectly and pour off the molten bismuth just in time for a behemoth like this to form. What would be a good name for this little guy?

If you're interested in this unique crystal, check out the shop in my bio, and follow for more information on bismuth, bismuth crystals, and the crystal making process. ☺️

Crystal of the Day: Vortex, 102.2 g, $28.

This bismuth crystal is a fairly large pyramid hopper crystal, with strong green coloration throughout. This crystal is almost entirely taken up by the main pyramid, making it beautiful to look at of balance on a desk.

Crystal of the week: Fern, 90.1 g ($19).

I'm loving taking these natural sh*ts of the bismuth crystals. It really allows their beauty to stand out. This one's a small, green-gold beauty 💚💚 which really stands out intl front of grass or plants.

One thing I've thought of using these for is as decorations inside of a terrarium. After all, bismuth is a beautiful and inert metal, which is often used as an environmentally friendly alternative to other similar metals such as lead.

Crystal of the Week: Potash, 90.0 g ($22).

I'm showing off some of my newest crystals in a more natural environment. As it happened, I was doing another grow today, so I found the perfect backdrop to show off this really interesting crystal! A fire-pot filled with ash! (Although yes I know, potash is more chemically specific than just ash in a pot, but wood ash is approximately 10% potash by weight!).

The interesting ashy patterns on this crystal formed when I accidentally dropped the geode it game from back into the melting pot 😖 before the oxide layer formed, resulting in some molten bismuth dripping off of it while some solidified, adding an interesting texture and an extra uneven oxidation layer (which, fyi is how bismuth gets it's rainbow colorations🌈.

There's bigger crystals to come, as I'm less than halfway through my current supply of bismuth. I look forward to showing more of these beauties, as well as more of the crystal making process.

Another thought I had would be to auction off some crystals on this post, but I'm not sure my audience is interested in that, as I tried it in the past and people didn't seem interested. Let me know in the comments if you want to try that!

Hey y'all, I'm experimenting with doing more videos on the bismuth making process. This one's a bit of an ASMR video mixed in with some knowledge about growing bismuth, and a good time with beer. Took a while to edit, but I do like to shine light on the process I go through to create these little beauties.

Anyways, the project for today was, among other things, coating bottle openers in bismuth. Id succeeded before in adding bismuth, but I didn't really get any crystal growth, so I knew I'd have to change up the method. Instead of manually dunking the bottle openers in bismuth, I suspended them from a copper wire which I strung taught across my melting pot. Then I melted the bismuth down before turning the heat off and letting it cool, generating a stylish hilt made of a bunch of tiny bismuth blocks. I'm super satisfied with this! What should I coat in bismuth next?

Ah, time to relax after grow #5. I'm finally getting the hang of things, and got quite a few crystals done today, despite my melting pot completely breaking halfway through the grow🤣. After getting a new one things went along great, and I got a few monstrous crystals which I'll show in a later post after I've cut this batch.

As you can see, I'm also starting to experiment with dipping other metals in bismuth, starting with this bismuth bottle opener I'm making for a friend. So far my technique has been to hold it in there for as long as I can with a pair of wrench pliers, but methinks a little more engineering is needed to acquire a nice, crystallized coating. The goal is to have a fair bit of small crystals around the grip to give it texture without poking holes in my fingers XD. But I'm also a rock climber, so I beat my fingers up on a daily basis 😅

Grow #4 is going great!! I spent the first 2 hours on a dud batch which didn't produce any crystals, but the second batch hit it out of the park. I got three beautiful fully-formed crystals, shown here.

1 - Honeycomb, 66.7 g. ~$20
2 - Shards, 90.9 g. ~$24
3 - Vortex, 124.8 g. ~$30

As with the crystal down earlier, these three will be up on the Etsy shop around this Friday, so feel free to make me an offer before then if you're interested!
