MARKET UPDATE — FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH
After reviewing the updated hourly forecast and watching the weather build throughout the day, we’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel this Friday’s Ghent Farmers Market.
This call is not easy — and if you were with us two weeks ago, you know exactly why. That day showed nothing in the forecast during market hours, and then out of nowhere the sky opened up and poured on us. Vendors lost product, time, money, and hours of preparation in minutes. It was heartbreaking, and we will not put them through that again.
And yes — the weather could change tomorrow. We know that. We’ve lived through that. But that’s exactly the problem. A farmers market isn’t something you can decide on at the last minute. Vendors bake, harvest, roast, prep, pack, label, load, and haul. Many pay employees to help them prepare. Some don’t have storefronts to sell their already‑made items if the market gets rained out. Waiting until Friday morning would mean asking them to gamble their entire day, their product, and their income on a forecast that’s already showing major red flags.
With the heat, the storm timing, and the high percentages we’re seeing, the safest and most respectful decision — for our vendors, our shoppers, and our community — is to cancel.
Trust me when I say: this breaks my heart. This season has been unpredictable and exhausting, and canceling is never easy. But protecting the people who make this market possible has to come first.
