I’ve been thinking about my dear friend Nick Phillips (Nick Phillips) a lot lately. For the better part of a decade, we shared our passion for collecting, learning, and exploring the stranger corners of history.

One of those shared interests was the tradition of Appalachian snake-handling churches. A small group of friends planned a trip to attend a service led by Pastor Jimmy Morrow on the backroads of Newport, Tennessee. Pastor Morrow was one of the last surviving snake-handling pastors. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the trip.

Nick—a pastor himself—selflessly brought me back this snake box, handcrafted by Pastor Jimmy. Today, both Nick and Jimmy are gone.

Every time I look at this incredible piece of American history, I’m reminded that it’s more than an artifact. It’s a story of friendship, shared passions, generosity, and the people who made those memories possible.

Sourced a truly rare one today. At first glance this 1891 board is impressive enough due to its stellar condition and rarity. But on closer inspection, this board stands out. Note the Ouija logo missing the trade mark incorporated in its design? Not unheard on for pre-registration boards, but unseen on post registration. Even more unique, is the stencil with trademark flanking the logo to either side. This is an undocumented example. Furthering the curiosity, the Ouija logo itself is stencil 2 typically associated with the Pratt street 1891-1893 boards, HOWEVER… those boards have the octagonal corners and are typically veneer over pine. What we likely have here is an example of a trade mark transition board with very few (less than 5) in private/museum collections.

Happy Friday everyone! We’ve been super busy and haven’t been posting as much as we hoped to start off the new year. We do have a lot of great things headed to the shop today, just in time for the weekend, including this amazing and hard-to-come-by flying fox skeleton.

We’re also stocking lots of new books, tarot cards, tools, , , and other incredible .
