🚨 STORYTIME! Please bear with me here LOL! 🚨
Yesterday reminded us what this hobby is really about.
A gentleman walked into Visalia Sports Cards after dropping his 5-year-old son off for his first day of kindergarten. He was new to collecting and told us he wanted to learn about the hobby so he could share it with his son.
While he was looking around, one of our regulars was hanging out at the shop opening a few boxes. Before long, two complete strangers were sitting there talking cards. Our regular showed him his pulls, explained the different cards and parallels, and helped introduce him to a hobby that has changed quite a bit over the years.
Then he handed him a few of the cards he'd just pulled.
Not because anyone asked him to.
Just because he wanted a new collector—and a little boy he'd never met—to have something to start with.
A little later, we noticed our new customer had stepped away from the counter and was wiping away tears.
That's when we learned he was an Air Force veteran.
Being from a military family ourselves, that opened up an entirely different conversation. We spent the next hour talking about his service, life after the military, becoming a father later in life, and how important it was to him to find something outside of the military that he and his son could experience together.
For him, maybe that something could be sports cards.
Before he left, we added a few more cards to his new collection and gave him some packs to take home so he and his son could open them together.
He told us he couldn't wait to bring his boy into the shop.
We can't wait either.
Yesterday wasn't about how many boxes we sold or what somebody pulled.
It was a veteran.
A father.
A five-year-old boy.
A couple packs of cards.
And two strangers who weren't strangers anymore.
That's the hobby.
And that's exactly what we want Visalia Sports Cards to be.

And to our customers who make people feel welcome when they walk through our doors—thank you for making this place more than a card shop.
