Paul and Myrtle Herzog Ranch

“The farm was established in 1915 and the dairy in 1916. The photo was taken about 1940. According to Uncle Rudy, it was owned and operated by Grandpa John until 1944. He sold part of the herd to Uncle Fritz and started raising beef cattle. When my dad Paul came back from the military service in the 50’s, he joined in and eventually took over the ranch.

Based on the dates and birth order, it looks like Dad’s sister’s, Irma and Sharon are on the horse behind the dairy wagon. Grandpa John, my Dad (Paul), Uncle Larry, and Grandma Elsa are by the dairy wagon. We are guessing Aunt Ruth is on the horse in front of the back bunk house. The boards for the frame actually came off a windbreak that was blown down in a storm 2 years ago. Many of the buildings still stand. I spent a lot of time in the chicken coop taking care of the chickens. However, cleaning the chicken coop was a primary punishment for misbehavior and I do remember cleaning it fairly often!

One thing I learned is the round building on the far right was a farrowing house but it no longer stands.”
