INTRODUCING THE LAUNCHING OF "The Retro Greek"
“The Retro Greek” hopes to take you on a trip to “Memory Lane” of “growing up Greek” in a simpler time in life on the West side of Chicago in the 60’s and 70’s.
For those of you familiar with the area, the old “West Side of Chicago” had a close-knit Greek-American community. Life was easy. It was a wonderful era of family, togetherness, and spiritual upbringing in the Greek Orthodox Community.
Sunday family dinner always took place after Church. My grandmothers and aunts would always have the “Arne” (Lamb), “Kota (Greek chicken)”, “Pastichio” (Greek Lasagna), or the “Dolmathes” (Meatballs wrapped in grape leaves) ready to go. The smell of freshly baked Greek Bread and pastries wafted from across the street at the Greek Bakery.
In the summer, all the neighborhood kids rounded up and played endless games of baseball in Columbus Park. The “Yiayias” (Greek Grandmothers) and “Papoulis” (Greek Grandfathers) would sit and visit with their friends on the park benches as they looked on to their grandchildren happily playing. The big baseball games would always end with an ice cream treat from the local Grocerland store on Harrison Street and an ice cold soda-pop.
Life was good. Days were simple. All official family business always took place at the kitchen table (intimately surrounded by at least 6 cousins or so), no matter the situation. It was a wonderful era of savoring the cuisine, the culture, and the simplicity of life that will never be forgotten.
The goal of “The Retro Greek” is to rekindle some of those fun memories and perhaps help you create new traditions of your own for you and your family in your walk of life.
