Our pastor preached on the Beatitudes today, specifically focusing on what it means to be ‘pure in heart, for they shall see God.’ Sitting in the pews, my mind went straight to the pages of my Naomi study.

When Naomi lost her husband and sons, her heart was completely broken. She even told people to call her bitter. But a pure heart doesn't mean a heart that never hurts—it means a heart that stays single-mindedly oriented toward the Lord even in the dark. Naomi didn't walk away from God; she stayed anchored, and by the end of her story, she literally saw God’s goodness unfold as she held a new grandson in her lap.

The Sales Pivot: Sundays are for taking the sermon home so it can root deep into your week. My template journal gives you a visual, creative framework to dive into stories like Naomi’s and map out how God purifies our hurts and reveals His goodness. Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Today as we celebrate our nation’s freedom with fireworks and family, my quiet time took me to the ultimate biblical story of liberation: Moses.

When you look at the First Mention box on my Moses layout, he enters a world of brutal oppression and slavery. But God heard the cries of His people and raised Moses up to deliver a message of absolute freedom to Pharaoh: “Let my people go.”

Using my circular stencil to map out his early life chronologically, you watch a timeline move from the chains of Egypt to the song of deliverance at the Red Sea. It’s a powerful reminder that our God is a Deliverer who hates chains and loves freedom.

Real freedom starts in the pages of scripture. If you want to move past surface-level reading and visually track the great rescue stories of the Bible, you need a layout built for depth. We are officially diving deep into character mapping this month, and I want to know where your heart is pulling you right now!

If you were to open up your Map the Word Bible Character Mapping Journal tonight (www.maptheword.com), which era of scripture are you running to first?

The Old Testament: Are you mapping the courage of Esther, the faith of Abraham, or the wrestling of Jacob?

The New Testament: Are you mapping the redemption of Paul, the loyalty of Mary Magdalene, or the passion of Peter?

Drop your answer below! And if you're ready to start mapping out their stories alongside us this July, you can grab your own journal at www.maptheword.com… shipping is always free and there is a instant download digital version as well!

For years, when I would pick up the Bible to read, I would either not know where to start or I’d read a chapter, close the book, check it off my list, and move on. But honestly, I was missing the heartbeat of the stories.

The turning point was when I stopped looking at characters as just “names on a page” and started looking at them as real people with messy lives. When you map out someone like Sarah, Peter, or Moses, you start to see patterns. You see how God responds to their fear, how He redeems their failures, and how He stays faithful even when they wander.

That’s when the Bible stopped feeling like an ancient history textbook and started feeling like a mirror. It showed me that if God could use them, He can use me.

Have you ever had a moment where a Bible character’s story suddenly felt incredibly relevant to your own life?

From a blank template to a finished map: Meet Sarah (Sarai)

To wrap up our tour from yesterday, I wanted to show you what the template looks like when it's put into action. This is my personal character map on Sarah.

For a long time, I just thought of her as Abraham’s wife who laughed when God promised her a baby in her old age. But when I mapped out her life step-by-step, I saw a much deeper story. I saw a woman who walked through decades of heartbreak, waiting, and even her own mistakes (like trying to force God's plan through Hagar).

Yet, God didn't give up on her. He literally changed her name from Sarai ('my princess') to Sarah ('My princess/ or mother of nations'). In Hebrews 11, she is praised because she ultimately “considered Him faithful who had made the promise.”

Mapping her life reminded me that God is not intimidated by our doubts, our impatience, or our laughter. He is faithful to finish what He starts.

This is exactly what I want for you this month. If you're ready to move past routine reading and start truly connecting with the characters of scripture, grab your journal at www.maptheword.com.

On the second page of the layout, you will see several boxes with “prompts” to help guide you in learning from the character that you mapped.

On the left side you will see a place to map out the person’s family tree (this space is blank so you can set it up however you want creatively). Next, underneath there is a box for key verses pulled from the Bible that are most important to the character’s life, heart, lessons, etc.

At the top right, I have created a box for you to add any key character traits about the character, good or bad. Next, you will see a box labeled Christ Connections…in every book of the Bible there is or can be a connection to Christ, but this section can be whatever you want it to be to connect the character’s life to the gospel. If the person you studied is evil, use this section to talk about how different they are from Christ’s example that He modeled for us. Under that, you will find a section for life lessons- in this section, just write any life lessons that you have taken away from the character’s story. Next, there is a section for you to reflect and apply lessons learned from their life to your own.

As you can see, there is plenty of space all around the page for extra little notes or to make your pages as colorful and creative as you want!

Lastly, there is a index at the back for you to keep track of all of the characters that you have mapped and a place to notate what page to find it on. So, no need to go in any particular order (for those of us who are perfectionists!) because you can easily flip to the back to easily locate your character maps.

Grab your journal at www.maptheword.com. I have created it in both digital and physical form (with free shipping!). I can’t wait to hear how this journal changes the way you study the Bible and the characters who God chose to fill its pages!

As we continue to dive deeper into the Map the Word Bible Character Mapping Journal, I want to show you how I map! So, let’s pick up where we left off this morning (go see previous post if you missed it!).

I use a circular stencil and create as many mapping bubbles as I need (I do these as I go) and inside each bubble I begin adding important details about the character’s life that I don’t want to forget. I typically go in chronological order, but that choice is completely up to you!

This picture is an example of a completed 1st page of the 2 page journal spread from the deeper study into the life of Sarah.

Visit www.maptheword.com to grab your journal (in digital or physical format) and stencil- add your favorite Bible and you will have all you need to get started on your character mapping journey!

Step inside the Map the Word Bible Character Mapping Journal with me!

I am so excited to spend this month diving deeper into the Word with you! Since many of you may have joined since I first introduced the journal at the beginning of the year, I wanted to open up the pages and show you exactly what makes this journal so special.

When I was studying, I felt like standard lined notebooks didn't give me enough direction, but heavily structured studies didn't give me enough room to breathe. So, I designed this custom template. It’s a blank canvas with a guided framework to help you map out the lives of the men and women of Scripture.

Today, I’m going to walk you through the exact sections I use to bring these historical figures to life. Have you ever tried character mapping the Bible before?

Let’s start with the left side of the 2-page layout. On this first page you will see in the top left a section for the first time the character was mentioned in the Bible. I usually just write the book, chapter and verse. In the top right corner, you will record the location and the dates the person lived. In the center, you will list the name of the person and their Hebrew name (if they have one) and their name’s meaning.

In the next post I will share how to start creating the maps that tell more about your character’s life so stay tuned!

If you are ready to purchase your own journal, I would love for you to visit my website at www.maptheword.com. Shipping is always free!

How a blank page turned into Map the Word Bible Character Mapping Journal 📖

A while back, I wanted to dive deeper into the characters of the Bible, as I was reading my daily Bible readings. I grabbed a regular blank notebook and started sketching out these people’s strengths, mistakes, timelines, and any connections to Jesus. It completely changed my quiet time. Not only did it help me keep the details of their lives organized, it helped me remember more about them and it was so fun getting to see my finished work on each page!

But keeping it organized on plain paper was tough. I wished there was a tool that already had the templates on the paper so that I would not have trace them each time.

That’s why I created the Map the Word Bible Character Mapping Journal. It’s a blank journal, but it features a custom template I designed to guide you step-by-step through mapping out the heroes and villains of Scripture. It’s the exact tool I needed for my own faith walk, and I’m so excited to share it with you all.

The Bible isn't a book of fairy tales; it's a history of real people loved by a real God.

When I created Map the Word, my prayer wasn't just to make a pretty notebook. My prayer was that this template would help you slow down, sit with the Lord, and realize that if He could use a stutterer like Moses or a doubter like Thomas, He can absolutely use you.

If you've been looking for a way to breathe fresh life into your scripture study this July, I’d love for you to try character mapping with me. You can check out the layout I designed at www.maptheword.com.

Thank you for letting me join you on your faith journey. Let’s get closer to Him together this month! ❤️

Tomorrow I will show you each of the pages up close so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting when you purchase a journal. smiley
