Beyond the Myths: Understanding Human Trafficking

Friday, September 11, 2026 | 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

Human trafficking is often portrayed in ways that don’t reflect how exploitation actually occurs. This 3-hour CEU workshop will move beyond the myths and give counselors practical, clinically relevant tools to better recognize and respond to trafficking.

Participants will learn to define the legal and practical realities of human trafficking and distinguish them from common misconceptions; recognize common indicators and risk factors associated with trafficking and exploitation; and apply trauma-informed strategies to appropriately identify, respond to, and refer potential victims.

Dr. Donaldson will be joined by Detective Joseph M. Scaramucci, whose extensive experience includes working on both state and federal investigations as a task force officer with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), contributing to investigations and arrests throughout the United States. Together, they bring an important combination of clinical and law-enforcement perspectives to this complex issue.
