Clumping bamboo is a beautiful, low‑maintenance, and practical choice for outdoor spaces.

It softens views of highways, wires, and other hard edges, while helping to buffer sound and catch dust from traffic.

You can shape it into a formal hedge and easily control its height with a pruning pole.

Best of all, these varieties are clumping, so they stay where they’re planted and won’t take over your yard.

We’ve cared for this family’s oceanfront lawn for three generations, and it’s grown and changed right along with them.

Back in the 80s, we installed St. Augustine grass via stolons (grass runners that creep along the soil, root, and slowly fill in the lawn).

In 2019, we upgraded to El Toro zoysia using hydromulch (a sprayed mix of seed, mulch, and nutrients that creates an even new lawn).

This year, we replaced the last of the St. Augustine with El Toro zoysia sod (fully grown grass rolled out for an instant, ready‑to‑enjoy lawn). We’ve grown a bit impatient with age, and sod gives our crew the instant results we like to see, while giving our client the instant lawn she was looking for.

It’s been an honor to help this property evolve from one generation to the next, keeping their lawn as strong as their roots. 🌿🌊

Ornamental asparagus sprengeri ferns are a simple, almost indestructible ground cover for a tricky entryway.

They’re actually related to the asparagus you toss on the grill, which makes pairing a lush green entry with asparagus on the BBQ a fun way to connect landscape and the dinner table. 😉

There are some real challenges to doing irrigation repairs in tight spaces.

The purple primer might be unsightly, but it’s your reassurance that every fitting has been properly prepared before it’s glued, which helps prevent fittings from separating later.

In cramped corners like this, priming and gluing every joint correctly is what protects you from leaks, wasted water, and surprise brown patches on your lawn.

Once the repairs are finished and tested, a simple can of spray paint can soften the visual impact and keep the system looking as good as it runs. 👍💚

After 50 years of marriage, my wife has instilled in me the importance of being efficient. While traveling between job sites, my usual lunch is an Ensure, two granola bars, and an apple.

I generally do not give money to people asking for help; instead, I prefer to offer something practical. On this occasion, rather than eat in front of someone, I offered the gentleman an Ensure. He thanked me, remarked that it was “good for you,” and opened it immediately.

I asked if he was familiar with the Institute for Human Services (IHS). He was and mentioned a social worker he works with.

Earlier this month, I discovered Aloha United Way 211, which I found to be an excellent resource. 💚

Old friends, Gossypium tomentosum — Hawaiian Cotton

When I drive out to Waimanalo, I look forward to seeing this native Hawaiian cotton plant that has survived three fires and summer droughts. I’m amazed at how each winter, following the rain, it comes back to life.

I was worried this year, as from a distance all I could see was tall grass. But when I got closer, I saw not only a new plant but the mother thriving.

In every season, the land reminds us resilience runs deep in Hawai‘i, and renewal is always just beneath the surface. 🌿
