Sohns as a music store selling instruments and sheet music. When the “Victrola” was introduced, it was added to the product line—an innovation that helped usher in the era of the radio. Sohns, son of J.A.A., entered the business after graduating from Walden High School at the young age of 15. Under Charles’ leadership, the business grew steadily, adding televisions and appliances along the way. In

1939, Sohns showcased its first television set, although it was only a prototype. Charles’ son, Jeffery, entered the business full-time in 1962 upon his graduation from college. Over the following decades, he oversaw two major expansions, helping establish Sohns as one of the Hudson Valley’s largest independent appliance retailers. John Sohns, the fourth generation, joined the business in 1989 after graduating from Marist College and was appointed President in 2002. Under his leadership, the business continues to flourish, and he looks to the future with the same enthusiasm and dedication that his great-grandfather instilled over a century ago. Today, the fifth generation—brothers Ethan and Logan Sherwood—carry that legacy forward. They are excited to grow the business, uphold the traditions established by the generations before them, and continue strengthening the company’s reputation for quality and service. As part of this next chapter, the fifth generation has proudly opened our newest location in Poughkeepsie, expanding Sohns Appliance Center’s presence in the Hudson Valley and positioning the business for continued success.

This is what hands-on training — and a quality appliance — looks like. 🔧🔥

Our service technicians Ethan and Chris recently tackled this Speed Queen dryer after discovering a serious amount of lint buildup throughout the cabinet, including directly around the heating system.

For this call, Chris was continuing his field training, with Ethan leading him through the diagnosis and repair from start to finish. They tore the machine down, cleaned out the buildup, replaced the failed heater components, inspected the surrounding wiring and components, reassembled everything, and thoroughly tested the dryer before putting it back into service.

And here’s one of the best parts:

This dryer is already 4 YEARS OLD — and the repair is STILL covered under the manufacturer’s warranty because it’s a Speed Queen. 💪

That’s one of the reasons we’re proud to sell and service Speed Queen. A strong warranty doesn’t mean much if you don’t have someone there to actually take care of you when you need it. That’s where our factory-trained service department comes in.

This is also a great reminder of how important proper dryer airflow and vent maintenance can be. Excessive lint buildup and restricted airflow can reduce performance, increase drying times, create excessive heat, and potentially become a serious safety concern.

At Sohns Appliance Center, we don’t just sell you an appliance and send you on your way. We sell it. We service it. We stand behind it. And we’re continuing to train the next generation of technicians to do the job right.
