A few pianos and projects from the past couple of weeks!

One of the things I enjoy most about this work is the variety. No two pianos, homes, or service calls are exactly alike.

The first photo is from the beautiful Holy Spirit Lutheran Church on Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley. It’s always a pleasure working in spaces like this and helping keep their instruments ready for worship and music.

The next grand piano was a recent evaluation, giving the owner a thorough assessment of the instrument’s condition and what it may need going forward.

The Baldwin upright was a much more involved project. It required extensive disassembly and cleaning, including removal of the action and keys so areas that normally aren’t accessible could be properly cleaned and serviced.

Whether it’s routine tuning and maintenance, evaluating a piano, or taking care of a more involved project, I enjoy helping owners understand their instruments and keep them performing their best.

Today I had the privilege of tuning the Steinway Model B at the beautiful Cathedral Church of Saint Luke and Saint Paul in downtown Charleston in preparation for a Piccolo Spoleto Festival event this evening.

This historic sanctuary is absolutely stunning, and it’s always a pleasure to care for instruments that serve such meaningful spaces. A well-maintained piano makes a difference not only in pitch and tone, but in how confidently it can support worship, concerts, and special events.

Grateful for the opportunity to help keep this Steinway sounding its best.

A few very different pianos from recent weeks.

From a polished Yamaha U1 with a beautiful Lowcountry view, to a church grand piano prepared for regular use, to extensive hammer shaping work on a piano that had gone many years without proper service.

These hammers were deeply grooved and heavily compacted from decades of wear. While many people think of piano service as “just tuning,” the mechanical and tonal condition of the instrument matters just as much.

Over time, neglected hammers can cause a piano to sound harsh, uneven, and difficult to control dynamically. Careful hammer shaping and voicing helps restore clarity, warmth, and a more even tone across the keyboard.

Regular piano care should involve more than tuning alone.

Not a bad office for the day — a piano with a view.

This beautiful grand piano sits right by the water, and today it received a full tuning along with some action adjustments to improve touch and responsiveness.

When the action comes out like this, you really get to see what makes a piano such an incredible machine. Every key is connected to dozens of precisely moving parts — all working together to turn a simple keystroke into music.

It’s one of my favorite parts of the job: seeing the craftsmanship inside these instruments and helping them perform their best again.

And views like this definitely don’t hurt.

Most people are surprised when they see what’s actually hiding inside a piano.

We are much more than a tuning-only service.
These are recent full-service appointments where pianos were carefully disassembled, cleaned, serviced, and tuned to perform the way they should.

If your piano hasn’t been serviced in years, it may need more than just a tuning. 🎹

Last week I had the opportunity to tune this grand piano at The Charleston Place ahead of the Charleston Police Department Annual Gala.

Event pianos in large venues require a different level of preparation than a typical in-home tuning. The instrument has to be stable, musically clean, and ready to perform consistently in a large acoustic space where every detail is more noticeable.

It was a privilege to help ensure the piano was performing at its best for such an important evening in the Charleston community.
