MORE THAN JUST A THRIFT SHOP: A story about sourdough & connection 🍞❤️

You never know what you might take home from a trip to the United Methodist Thrift Shop—sometimes it’s a great bargain, and sometimes it’s a sourdough starter! 🌾

A few days ago, one of our wonderful volunteers (and my mom!), got to chatting with a shopper (another amazing lady!) on the sales floor. Their conversation quickly turned to baking, and when my mom learned the shopper wanted to try making her own sourdough, she promised to bring her a bit of her own active starter.

A few weeks ago, that starter was delivered! 🥖✨

Our shop isn't just about the items on the shelves; it’s about the relationships built around them. It’s where neighbors become friends, traditions are shared, and community happens naturally.

We had a great work day today! 9 volunteers gave their time and skills to help process donations and resize items on the sales floor. Sometimes items don't make it back to the correct spot and we know it's easier to shop when items are in their home. Thank you for helping make the Thrift Shop a wonderful asset to our community ❤️

Did you know the Wamego United Methodist Church offers meals twice a week? Sunday breakfast 8:30 am - 10 am and Wednesday dinner 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm. Anyone is welcome to join us! We love meeting new people and invite you to join us for a meal.

🍽️ What’s on the menu at Wamego UMC this August? 🍽️

Everyone is invited to pull up a chair and share a meal with us! Join us every Wednesday night in Fellowship Hall from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. for good food, great fellowship, and a warm community.

Here is what our volunteer cooks are serving up this month:

🍖 August 12th: Ribs with Baked Beans & Coleslaw

🍚 August 19th: Pork with Fried Rice

🌮 August 26th: Chicken Fajitas

Our meals are open to anyone and everyone in our community, no strings attached. Free-will donations are always welcome to help us continue this mission of sharing love and feeding our neighbors, but payment is never required to pull up a seat at our table.

More Than Just a Thrift Shop 💙

At the United Methodist Thrift Shop, we’re proud to offer great bargains, hidden treasures, and items you didn't even know you needed until you walked through the door!

But more than that, we are a place for connection. A place to catch up with old friends, see a friendly face, and feel right at home in our community.

While our team is always ready to offer a warm smile, a listening ear, or help you find a bargain... we are definitely NOT a medical clinic! (If you ever need medical attention, our wonderful local hospital and emergency teams are much better equipped than our button-sorting station! 🩺😉)

A huge thank you to our alert volunteers and local EMS for keeping our community safe today. We are so grateful to be a space where neighbors look out for neighbors—in more ways than one.

When do we accept donations? We accept donations during our open hours! The best place to bring donations is through the alley entrance. Look for the spiral staircase and bright red sign. If you reach the library mural, you've gone too far ;)
