Ever wonder why sugar cookies cost so much? Let's talk about it 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Sugar cookies take way more work than most people realize. Here's an estimated time breakdown for the two-dozen order pictured below:
- Make dough (1 hr)
- Roll, cut, and bake (2 hrs)
- Make icing (30 min)
- Design and print cutters (4 hrs)
- Mix colors and consistencies (2–3 hrs)
- Base flood all cookies (4–5 hrs)
- Prep and upload custom graphics for Eddie the Edible Printer (matching print size and color) (3 hrs)
- Fine detail work (4–5 hrs)
- Clean up (1 hr)
- Individually package cookies (1 hr)
Total: 22.5–25.5 hours for two dozen cookies.
My starting price is $65/dozen (so $130 total in this scenario)
That works out to $5.78–$5.10/hour, and that's before factoring in the cost of ingredients, packaging materials, or electricity.
Even on orders where I already have the cutters and dough made (just not baked), it still takes 17–20 hours…which only brings me to $7.65–$6.50/hour.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. I absolutely enjoy making cookies. The Lord has blessed me with this talent, and I am TRULY thankful for every single order that I receive. I do NOT take it lightly that my customers spend their hard-earned money on cookies from me. BUT… it would be truly unfair to myself if I only charged $25-$30 per dozen.
