August Sander at Yale, only there until the last week of June. I saw a retrospective of his work at the Met when I was very young, maybe 25 years ago and it moved me deeply — seeing through his eyes again does so even more. I’m not moved to tears so much in galleries, but I was here. Consummate humanist, you can feel both the photographer’s gaze and the sitter, captured in seeming totality. His categories — “Businessmen” (this includes everyone from the stockbroker to the matchseller on the street) “The Persecuted” (mostly Jews, but also some intellectuals), “People who Came to My Door” (beggars, salesmen, neighbors), “The Last People” (those we do not count, or have been discounted — the handicapped, the unsightly, the dead). His own son appears twice: first photographed in his own cell as a political prisoner, again as a death mask, beside two corpses labeled only “Matter.” You must go. It may shape your life, as it has mine.

The inside is as sublime as the outside. We’ve walked the grounds many times, but this was the first we were able to actually go inside; my expectations were not disappointed. Dreamscape after dreamscape, with Persian tiles and Lockwood de Forest carving all over the place. The colors, not surprisingly, are 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 — total masterclass on the effects of hue in space, orchestrated entirely by Church himself. Leighton House in London is the only other place Olana reminds me of, but at Leighton House the contents have either been collected back or reproduced. Nothing here ever left. Extraordinary.
