We're a family owned and operated outdoors store and outfitter on the banks of the Allegheny River in downtown Warren, Pennsylvania. We span 107 miles of the National Wild & Scenic Allegheny River, and offer backpacking rentals in the Allegheny National Forest. Our shop offers bike maintenance, xc ski and snowshoe rentals, trip planning services, along with quality gear from brands like Old Town,

Ocean, MSR, KEEN, Osprey, Seal Line, Platypus, Therm-A-Rest and Bending Branches. Our trip planning space offers topo maps, National Park maps, grab and go destination directions to secret spots in the Allegheny National Forest, and a river table to spread out resources as you plan. We also have a really cool mashup of unique gifts from small-batch makers.

USACE outflow from Kinzua Dam: 1,280 cubic feet per second (cfs). Gage height: 8.04'. Allegheny River water temperature at Kinzua Dam: 70.4 degrees.

Conewango Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just upstream of our launch area at mile 9, is currently at 3.17' and dropping slowly. (Summer average 2.5'.) Conewango Creek is also very slow to recede.

Brokenstraw Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just downstream of Buckaloons (mile 15.5), is currently cresting at 3.75' and dropping. (Summer average 2'.) Brokenstraw Creek is very quick to rise and very quick to recede.

We are open for normal operations! We have a handful of canoes, kayaks, and double kayaks still available. Reservations are easy to make online (link in comments). Shop is open 10am to 6pm today!

This must be "new to us" fish week, and we're looking for a little help again with an identification.

Clearly a catfish of some sort with those barbels. This is our first ever catfish, and at the entrance of the inlet no less, where we've explored extensively the last few years.

The darker chin barbels and squarish caudal fin have us leaning toward a brown bullhead. Or could it be a type of madtom?

Either way, pretty cool to catch sight of a catfish! (And those two little bass following behind!)

Okay folks, thankfully, the rain wasn't nearly as much as predicted through the night!

Current conditions:
USACE outflow from Kinzua Dam: 1,300 cubic feet per second (cfs). Gage height: 8.05'. Allegheny River water temperature at Kinzua Dam: 69.4 degrees.

Conewango Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just upstream of our launch area at mile 9, appears to be cresting at 3.24'. (Summer average 2.5'.) Conewango Creek is very slow to recede.

Brokenstraw Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just downstream of Buckaloons (mile 15.5), crested this morning, currently at 4.8' and dropping nicely. (Summer average 2'.) Brokenstraw Creek is very quick to rise and very quick to recede.

The river water is clear, and actually on the low side, from Kinzua Dam to AO (photo 1). We gain an inch or two, and a bit of murky water, from AO to Buckaloons (photo 2). South of Buckaloons, the water is murkier, and we gain another 5 to 6" as Brokenstraw Creek recedes (photo 3). We have not seen any debris.

We are open with normal operations for the holiday weekend!

We're back in the deep water this morning, observing a couple carp make their way through.

We're unsure what this first one is and are looking for a little help with identification. Notice the odd scales. (And attached lamprey.) We are coming up with a mirror carp, but they are not in any of our identification books. The second one is a common carp for comparison.

Conewango Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just upstream of our launch area at mile 9, is currently at 2.87' and rising very slow. (Summer average 2.5'.) Conewango Creek is also very slow to recede.

Brokenstraw Creek, which enters the Allegheny River just downstream of Buckaloons (mile 15.5), is currently cresting at 4.74'. (Summer average 2'.) Brokenstraw Creek is very quick to rise and very quick to recede.

The river water is clear, and actually on the low side, from Kinzua Dam to AO. We gain an inch or so, and a bit of murky water, from AO to Buckaloons. South of Buckaloons, the water is murkier, and we gain another 5 to 6" as Brokenstraw Creek recedes. We have not seen any debris.

There is a light rain at the moment, and we're expected to get another round through the night.

We'll check in tomorrow morning with a better idea of conditions. We're in store for a beautiful holiday weekend, and sure hope these next storms allow us to safely play on the river throughout it!

AO friends, meet our newest family member, Idgie. At 10 weeks old, she's completely stolen our hearts with her adorable clumsiness, occasional sass, solid cuddling capabilities, and her ability to nap... anywhere.

She's learning the ropes from her big brother Olly, and will be a regular greeter at the shop as she grows up!

We're tucked away in one of the rivers many little nooks this morning, observing one eastern newt swim to the surface.

Although they're born with gills, eastern newt drop the gills and grow lungs for their juvenile stage, which we see as the red eft roaming slowly around the forest floor. As adults, they return to the water to live out their days.

It's in this stage they have to do their awkward little swim-sprint up to the surface, poking their nose through the surface film, gulping a breath of air, and cruising back down. They're basically an air-breathing land critter that decided to live underwater anyway.

They do get a bonus assist, though: the ability to absorb some oxygen directly through their skin. This helps stretch out the time between trips, but is more a supplement, not a replacement.

Love that little air bubble that comes out on the way down!

We're geekin' out pretty hard at AO! We got to meet Thomas Dambo!

If that name doesn't ring a bell, it will soon - we're getting two of his troll creations in 2027 as part of a regional series of 6 trolls!

Seriously, as a Goonie at heart, it was so cool to talk shop with the man behind 'em. They've always brought us so much joy and made the outdoor imagination just wander!

Friends, we have some exciting news to share!

We spent a lot of time last winter organizing our underwater videos, and in doing so, the algorithm must've picked up on it. In the wee hours of a late February night, the National Audubon Society Photography Awards popped up on our feed, highlighting one category for videos.

We gave it some thought and decided to submit the Great Blue Heron striking underwater at the inlet last fall.

And it was chosen as the winner!

We feel so lucky to be able share the rivers story with each of you every day. For one of our videos to be recognized by the National Audubon Society is, genuinely, such an honor!
