We're a family owned and operated outdoors store and outfitter on the banks of the Allegheny River in downtown Warren, Pennsylvania. We span 107 miles of the National Wild & Scenic Allegheny River, and offer backpacking rentals in the Allegheny National Forest. Our shop offers bike maintenance, xc ski and snowshoe rentals, trip planning services, along with quality gear from brands like Old Town,

Ocean, MSR, KEEN, Osprey, Seal Line, Platypus, Therm-A-Rest and Bending Branches. Our trip planning space offers topo maps, National Park maps, grab and go destination directions to secret spots in the Allegheny National Forest, and a river table to spread out resources as you plan. We also have a really cool mashup of unique gifts from small-batch makers.

Let's take one more look at that northern pike at the inlet. This time, its speedy getaway.

Northern Pike swim at speeds of 8 - 10 mph on average. As ambush predators, their sudden bursts can be much faster.

USACE outflow from Kinzua Dam: 2,310 cubic feet per second (cfs). Gage height: 8.57'. Allegheny River water temperature at Kinzua Dam: 60.8 degrees. USACE will be lowering outflow to 1,600 cfs this morning.

We have a handful of seats available on our 10:30am shuttle up to Kinzua Dam, and will be running trips to Buckaloons until noon.

Walk-ins are always welcome to give it a try, but reservations guarantee you get where you need to go. (And are appreciated!)

We've observed them as adults under the water catching fish, but even as babies, merganser possess that narrow, hooked bill with tiny, sharp serrations.

It sure appears much less threatening at this age. 😉

Come along as we get in a beautiful 7 mile hike on the Zealand Trail in White Mountains National Forest!

Part of the AO crew is making a mad dash to Maine to pick up a load of new kayaks, so we made a quick stop to stretch our legs in New Hampshire.

Fresh air therapy, and a beautiful waterfall at the end, too!

We've had several community members reach out with concerns about the possibility of data centers in Warren County over the last year.

To be clear, there is currently no proposed data center in our county. This is County officials being proactive in creating an ordinance.

The Planning Commission is working on drafting a data center ordinance. We attended the Warren County Commissioners meeting a couple weeks ago to express concern and respectfully request public hearings be held while the data center ordinance is still in the draft phase.

We appreciate the transparency and meaningful discussion from the Planning Commission Director and our County Commissioners.

We'll keep you posted as to when public hearings will be held.

We've come across what we believe is another northern pike in the small inlet this morning.

After quietly playing a long, slow game of hide and seek around this small area for the better part of an hour, it simply stopped and allowed us to take a look at it.

Let's zoom in on those whirligig beetles speeding around the waters surface.

Whirligigs have two sets of wings. Their forewings are hardened and short, cover most of their abdomen, and work as protective cases for their flying wings. They're coated in a specialized, water-repellent layer that keeps the beetle buoyant and dry.

Their hindwings are the delicate flying wings used to relocate to other waterways if needed.

And check out those split compound eyes. They allow 'em to see both above and below the water's surface at the same time.

Such cool little creatures zooming around in their specialized armor!
