332 Water Street, Warren RI. Beehive Handmade began in a tiny studio in the pantry of Jim Dowd’s and Sandra Bonazoli’s house in 1999. Jim had been making large sculptures, as well as fabricating architectural metalwork for customers like Bill Gates. Meanwhile, Sandra was showing one-of-a kind jewelry in galleries. Eventually they became more interested in making objects for people to enjoy in their daily lives at home, instead of work to appreciate in galleries. They were inspired by the kitchenware they found in old homes and flea markets, and asked “Why are the useful objects made today so plain, when they could be decorative too?” So they made their own kitchenware that was as beautiful as it was functional. Now Beehive Handmade occupies a 3000 square foot factory space and produces thousands of objects every year. Each product starts as a hand fabricated original model, made out of brass, in the traditional way. Then the model is molded and cast in pewter at a local factory in Massachusetts. Jim and Sandra are inspired by the folk art of many cultures, flora and fauna, beautiful cakes, and quirky old tools.

We've been awfully busy gearing up for the holidays- too busy, it seems to capture some images to share. Luckily, the fine people at H A M L E T R E S T A U R A N T have taken some wonderful pictures of their gorgeous new restaurant. We've loved seeing our candlesticks on the tables throughout and are excited to share some images of this warm, beautiful space!

So many ways to celebrate welcoming a new baby to the world!

We sent out a newsletter this morning about the baby cups and spoons we make, and in writing it I really thought about how extraordinary it is to make an object that someone will keep for their whole life. That’s, like, a lot of pressure! We’re grateful to hear from so many customers that parents are delighted to have received one of our baby cups, and it means a lot that these special little objects we make and love become family heirlooms. And really, how many heirlooms are this cute???

FYI – pewter baby cups are food safe (of course), anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so they are practical as well as ceremonial gifts to give. And it’s not just that they’re made from a beautiful, celebratory material – they’re thoughtfully designed and engraved right here in our studio.

It’s no wonder we love them. And we know you will too.

Labor and love. Because we work with our hands every day, it can be easy to take for granted how special a handmade object truly is. Getting the lid to fit just right, touching up little spots so the surface of the metal catches the light, and a thousand other considerations go into everything we make. After years of making, details of the process become second nature in a way that is familiar but no less special.

Earlier in the week, we posted our die forming process. Today, Jim pierced out all friffery and soldered on the appliquès. We are SO excited about our new dala horse ornament!
