Beehive Handmade

Beehive Handmade American artists crafting handmade meaningful gifts for life's milestones and everyday celebrations. Home decor, personalized baby gifts & holiday ornaments.

American made in Rhode Island since 1999.
332 Water Street, Warren RI. Beehive Handmade began in a tiny studio in the pantry of Jim Dowd’s and Sandra Bonazoli’s house in 1999. Jim had been making large sculptures, as well as fabricating architectural metalwork for customers like Bill Gates. Meanwhile, Sandra was showing one-of-a kind jewelry in galleries. Eventually they became more interested in

making objects for people to enjoy in their daily lives at home, instead of work to appreciate in galleries. They were inspired by the kitchenware they found in old homes and flea markets, and asked “Why are the useful objects made today so plain, when they could be decorative too?” So they made their own kitchenware that was as beautiful as it was functional. Now Beehive Handmade occupies a 3000 square foot factory space and produces thousands of objects every year. Each product starts as a hand fabricated original model, made out of brass, in the traditional way. Then the model is molded and cast in pewter at a local factory in Massachusetts. Jim and Sandra are inspired by the folk art of many cultures, flora and fauna, beautiful cakes, and quirky old tools.

Labor and love. Because we work with our hands every day, it can be easy to take for granted how special a handmade object truly is. Getting the lid to fit just right, touching up little spots so the surface of the metal catches the light, and a thousand other considerations go into everything we make. After years of making, details of the process become second nature in a way that is familiar but no less special.

In my heart and mind, it's still summer, but at the studio, we're gearing up for the holidays and getting ready to ship this year's collaboration with the The Metropolitan Museum of Art . The ornaments in this year's collection are The Watchful Cat based on a watercolor by John Alonzo, a Baby Elephant from The Circus series by Messer's Gum, and a Greek Owl based on a terracotta skyphos (which is a deep-drinking cup - I didn't know, either).

We love bringing these to life and are honored to be part of supporting The Met's collection, conservation, and presentation of artwork from around the world. Look for them online in just a few weeks!

How have 28 years gone by in the blink of an eye? Happy Anniversary to my most beloved companion in life, Jim. Sometimes, I wish time could stand still (mostly so I'd still have brown hair), but then I'd miss out on the adventures yet to come. As long as I have your company, I know my life will be better than it ever could be without you. ❤️

In our newsletter today, we're sharing some gift ideas for your gardening friends and neighbors. Why not show them your gratitude for sharing those extra tomatoes and zucchini with a thoughtful little gift? Hopefully, they'll come back again with more homegrown goodness!

A favorite custom engraving from earlier in the week. We don't know what it means exactly, but something definitely worth commemorating happened on that day!
