The Vision of a Brand and a Passion for Coffee

I was never a coffee drinker in my youth. I remember in my teens and early twenties walking by coffee stores in the mall and enjoying the smell of the coffee. That rich aroma would entice me to try it more than once. Every time the bitterness and acidity made my face contort in disgust and I never finished a cup.

Then one day out of desperation to stay awake at work I mixed coffee with a packet of hot chocolate and found a winner. I got the caffeine I needed without the bitter nastiness. After a while I became so accustomed to having my morning cup o’ joe that even when there wasn’t any hot chocolate to be had I’d drink the coffee anyway. I slowly got used to and started enjoying the flavor of the coffee so I weaned myself off of the version that tasted more like hot ice cream than true coffee.

What I didn’t know then was that I was really drinking bad coffee. Back then it was either work coffee or gas station coffee. Starbucks and the myriad of other specialty coffee shops weren’t around. Once coffee started becoming trendy I began broadening my horizons and found that there are so many varieties, roasts, and brewing methods. I truly started enjoying the dark elixir for what it is.

Enter mi Esposa (my wife). I met my wife in 2013. She is a native Colombian and coffee is kind of her thing. She drinks coffee like most American drink Coke. There is never too much and it’s never too late in the day. Hot or cold brew, black or with cream, she likes it all. Just don’t add sugar or flavorings. That’s a no-no.

When we first started dating it was a long distance thing. After all, she lived in Colombia and I lived in middle of nowhere Missouri. During my travels to visit her in Colombia, not only did she expose me to the culture and the beauty of the country, she exposed me to what real coffee is supposed to taste like. Let me tell you, there is nothing like fresh roasted, perfectly brewed Colombian coffee. The single best cup of coffee I’ve ever had was brewed in a French press by a friend of my wife’s at a dinner party. It was so good I almost forgot it was coffee. It was otherworldly smooth and balanced with an almost sweet flavor, no bitterness and mild acidity. I will never forget it. Of course my wife doesn’t like that I can’t forget it.

After that I was hooked. No other coffee but Colombian will do for me. I would bring as much as I could back with me after every trip and mourn the day I drank the last cup knowing I would have to drink “just okay” coffee until my next visit. Once we got married and she moved to the United States in 2015 we had a difficult time finding coffee she deemed worthy enough to drink every day. That’s when we decided to come up with our own. Three years later, after intensive research about coffee, how and where to source it, roast it, package it, sell it, Colombiana Coffee Company was born.
