The Gray Shed

The Gray Shed Welcome to The Gray Shed. Functional home decor, personalized gifts and home goods. Our creations are inspired by makers we've discovered in our family tree.

We hope you find something you love, reminds you of loved ones and helps tell your own story. Hello, I'm Lisa. The Gray Shed is my online shop and blog. I write about genealogy research, home decor topics as they relate to mixing bits of nostalgia into daily life and our products. Our Front Porch is a newsletter, a section of our blog and an online community that's inspired by long lazy summer aft

ernoons and evenings spent visiting with friends and family on an actual porch, talking about life, playing games, and telling stories. The Gray Shed is Casual, family run and our shopkeepers are in and out, and engage in storytelling from time to time. Our groups here on Facebook are West Virginia Genealogy and Genealogy of the Virginias and have more than 10,000 members. Use these to help you in your own genealogy research projects. Our shop also has a group where we offer special discounts and share about our products.

Captain Benjamin Clement.

A man of standing in his community before the American Revolution began, in 1751 (and about 51 years old) he was serving as Justice of the Peace in Halifax County, Virginia and by 1755 he was leading a local militia ranger company organized to protect the frontier. He accumulated land in the Staunton River Valley, and planted to***co on the south bank. In partnership with a man named Charles Lynch, he built the area’s first gunpowder mill to supply gunpowder to the Continental Army. This is one of many of my family's contributions to the American Revolution. Are you related to Captain Clement? Tell us about it in the comments 👇 By the way, many of his descendants settled in the Kanawha County area of West Virginia.

Captain Benjamin Clement of Virginia is my DAR patriot ancestor. As America 250 arrives, here is what the research reveals about his life, his gunpowder mill, and the family he left behind.
