October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and for me, this is more than something to share. It’s part of my story.
Years ago, I was in an abusive relationship. I was embarrassed and scared, and leaving wasn’t easy. I honestly don’t know how much longer I would have stayed had I not feared for the safety of my child.
I rarely talk about those days now because they feel like a lifetime ago. But I haven’t forgotten the struggling new mama I was, or the sweet baby boy I wanted so desperately to protect.
I once found a photo of the two of us tucked behind the sheet music for “Something Beautiful,” -a song I sang and played as a teen. Back then, I didn’t give the words much thought. Finding that picture years later, I could hardly read them through my tears.
“Something beautiful, something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife
But he made something beautiful of my life."
God’s grace and faithfulness brought us through some very dark and scary times. Looking at that photo reminded me of how far He has carried us—and how grateful I am for the life we have today.
Domestic violence doesn’t always look like bruises. It can be humiliation, threats, manipulation, isolation, controlling someone’s money, or repeatedly tearing them down until they believe the hurtful things being said. It can happen to women and men, in any community.
If this sounds familiar, please hear me: abuse is never your fault. You are worthy of love, respect, and safety. You don’t have to figure out your next step alone.
And if someone trusts you with their story, listen with compassion. Leaving can be complicated and frightening. They need support, not judgment—not just in October, but all year long.
Thank you, Lord, for making something beautiful out of my brokenness.
