September 11, 7pm to late: Fantom’s annual pre-SMALL PRESS EXPO party is a launch party for the Fieldmouse Press hardcover edition’ of our friend Ting’s comic THE CANNIBALS 🔪

drinks! music! Tinguu will be interviewed by comics historian Ryan Holmberg, and cartoonist Grayson Bear (aka Grayson Bear) will be doing flash tattoos! there will also be some LIVE ART by artists to be announced…

The Cannibals sold out three times at Fantom back when Tinguu self-published it, so we’re proud to see it get the hardcover treatment and reach a wider audience 🥲

Fantom Comics is located at 2010 P Street NW 2nd floor—if you’re in town for Small Press Expo we’re a short train ride down the red line from the SPX hotel, near the Dupont Circle metro station.

The vampire Olive Yo struggles to make enough money to buy expired fake blood. Crushing on a rock star celebrity chef named Chamomile, (who only works with “ethically-sourced parasites”), an alley-way encounter leads both women on an unexpected path. Tinguu’s dystopian art is deeply satirical, sexy, horrifying, and ultimately liberating.”

finally back to a Magic: The Gathering Universes Within set! but all is not what it seems… come see Reality Fracture yourself at Fantom’s prerelease weekend! the new cards will be available for purchase beginning September 25, and our tournaments are Friday 9/25 (6:30pm • 3 rounds), Saturday 9/26 (4pm • 4 rounds), and Sunday 9/27 (4pm • 4 rounds); $40 entry each day. prize support provided!

then if you’re looking to learn, we’re hosting a Magic: The Gathering learn-to-play beginner event on Monday 9/28 at 6:30pm. one of our friendly & patient Magic judges will teach you the ins and outs of the game, then you’ll play your first matches against the other beginners with the judge onhand to answer questions! $10 entry; all attendees receive a welcome deck to play with and take home 🃏

our next Mario Kart World grand prix is September 24 at 6:30pm, fundraising for SOME (So Others Might Eat) 🤝 all welcome! $10 donation entry to compete, FREE to hang out and spectate.

please bring your Switch 2 if you’ve got one! no worries if you don’t—we’ll have extra controllers.

we’ll run a few 24-player knockout tours, and then the top 4 overall players will compete in a 4-race standard grand prix at the end for prizing.

we’re excited to announce fantom’s inaugural Taiwan Comics Showcase 🪐 bringing 5 Taiwanese cartoonists to the DMV next month as special guests at North America’s oldest independent comics festival Small Press Expo September 12-13.

A ee mi, Ding Pao-Yen, Crystal Kung, Monday Recover, and Rio represent a wide range of genres and art styles. they are at the forefront of Taiwanese comics breaking through into the american comics market.

an update for our weekly Magic: The Gathering commander format players & Flesh and Blood players:

We are humbled by the rising popularity of Fantom’s MTG commander format as well as Flesh and Blood play every Wednesday. They may be more popular than our small space can handle, with some players arriving up to an hour early to claim their tables.

This is a great problem to have, but it is more work for our staff, and unfortunately it’s not financially viable. $5 per player does not cover our costs for how long the store is packed with players. We are raising our entry fee to $10, or $10 minimum purchase.

Thank you for understanding. Fantom is thrilled to continue building our trading card game community!
