I love introducing ixöq to new areas & I’m really looking forward to this market. All I’ve heard is great things & I’m honored to be a part of it.

NYC … we are ready! I am so excited for next week’s Shoppe Object (SHOPPE OBJECT).

This is our 11th (!!!) show and it’s where we have met most of our wholesale partners through the years & where we always love connecting with retailers, old & new. It is stunning and gorgeous and fresh and always a pleasant break from the craziness around us. Who doesn’t like to wander and look at beautiful, well curated products?

Our catalog is updated. Our collections are ready (scroll to see what we’re highlighting) & we are excited to introduce some new colorways, new products, and new ideas.

It’s also our first show as Fair Trade Federation verified and as part of the Nest Guild Nest, which we are so excited about!

Retailers ~ I hope to see you there (booth 3-D113) Aug 2-4 💛 Please dm me if you’d like to set a time to meet. Otherwise please plan to stop by.

I’ve given up on Faire doing the right thing and taking time to help me fix my online wholesale shop so that it’s operable and I can make sales during their summer market 😢

And am now focusing on what does keep me happy and engaged, which is meeting and working with people in person!

So please join us this Saturday for our Two Years on the Brookland Arts Walk celebration!

This is the community I cherish and want to celebrate. Saturday July 25 10-3

I got the photos from the shoot and LOVE them! 💛💛💛 These are a few of my faves.

I’ll be using these on the site.

They’ll brighten our wholesale catalogs.

And adorn the new website, but I am too excited not to give a sneak peak!

I just got back from my trip to Guate where I was able to intersperse lots of work with lots of fun. I loved seeing Paulina from Manos Cruceñas Artisan Store. She manages their wholesale program & coordinates tassel production for our cestas

The view from the balcony at CECAP Amigos de Santa Cruz never disappoints and the food is amazing.

Leidy arrived with the cestas she made when we were visiting the artisans in San Cristóbal. Ruth Ramos

The garden at casa Pamakanya was stunning as always. Casa Pamakanya

I met with the wholesale group who coordinates the beaded items and started making plans for holidays.

I got to see my favorite farm dog visitor Raya (we met when he was a puppy). He’s looking strong and healthy.

I met with a potential new maker. I’m cooking up some ideas for new complementary products.

The produce there is amazing! I always love going to the open markets.

Daily paddle boarding kept me in balance - literally and figuratively!

Always a fun crew to travel with and get things done at the house!

All in all a fabulous trip. I feel fortunate to have these opportunities.

What an amazingly fun photo shoot today on the streets of Antigua, Guatemala.

We started with product shots in the beautiful gardens of my favorite hotel Hotel Los Pasos.

The setting couldn’t have been any better and the cestas looked so good. We had a couple of hotel guests ask where they could get them!

Jim was helpful and went and bought props!

The photos were staged at several historic spots. We started at Escuela de Cristo

Basically anywhere we chose would’ve been stunning. This city is so beautiful.

We wandered from spot to spot a ways keeping our eyes open for a good backdrop.

A colorful wall.

Ruins.

Street corners.

A communal pila.

Many many gorgeous doors. It was a great day and I thank Pamela González | Antigua Guatemala Photographer vale🫀 Haydeé Archila / Asesora de Imagen & Malú for their hard work, for their insights, and for helping ixöq today. 💛

A busy day visiting the artisans. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with them and discuss their work with ixöq and to continue to learn more about their craft.

This visit we reviewed different styles and designs and which are the hardest to make. It’s not always what one would assume.

More about that to come. For now we’re heading out to meet the group who make our tassels!

How we make this.

All ixöq products are designed locally in DC by me (katie - cofounder/director/creative) and hand woven by women artisans in Guatemala using recycled plastic cord.

But how are they made?

The recycled plastic cord is purchased by color by the pound in units similar to a skein of wool.

The shape of the product is achieved by using a wooden frame, around which the cord & design is woven.

The mold in this image is for a cylindrical container.

A completed version is shown in the back of the photo (with gorgeous hydrangeas in it!)

Color changes are achieved by melting the strands together when there’s a change in the design.

Screws are used to hold the ‘warp’ strands in place.

In this example the weave pattern is fairly simple but it still requires an adeptness of hand in order to maintain a consistent tension and a tight enough weave that it will hold its shape once removed from the wooden mold.

Each product and each size has its own mold. This is why we might do custom colors but we do not do custom sizes. Every new size requires a new mold.

That’s how they’re made! No machines. And a lot of hand & hard work.
