They're Watching Us

Children hear what we tell them.

But they also watch what we do.

They see how we handle disappointment.
How we treat people.
How we get back up when things don't go our way.

Sometimes the lesson they'll remember most is the one we never meant to teach.

Why I Write These Stories

Folks sometimes ask where my stories come from.

Truth is, they come from watching children grow.

They fail. They get frustrated. They wonder if they can do it.

And then somebody says, "Try one more time. "

I've seen what a few words of encouragement can do for a child.

So those are the stories I choose to tell.

Stories that remind children that falling isn't failing - and that sometimes they're capable of a whole lot more than they think.

Who Taught You?

Do you remember who taught you to ride a bike?

Funny how many years can pass and we still remember the person running alongside us, telling us;

KEEP GOING. I'VE GOT YOU.

Sometimes the lesson wasn't really about the bicycle.

It was about having somebody believe in us until we learned to believe in ourselves.

A Little Grandpa Wisdom

Now, if there's one thing I've learned watching children grow, it's this:

We can't take every tumble for them.

Sometimes we've got to stand close enough to catch them if they really need us - but far enough away to let them discover what they're capable of.

That little moment when a child says, "I did it!"

That's worth waiting for.

Every child fails.

But Every failure is a chance to discover courage.

One of the greatest gifts we can give children isn't making life easier - it's reminding them they're strong enough to try again.
