This bookstore honors the memory of slain journalist Charnice Milton (6/19/87- 5/27/15) while promoting access to books, proven to be a key element in fostering literacy. Increased literacy, in turn, helps reduce crime and associated violence. Neighborhoods East of the River in Washington, DC, have not had a bookstore for many years. st in Ward 8. Ward 7’s last bookstore, on Sheriff Road, which sold Christian religious texts and related items, is also long gone. There are small shops, offering specialized books, inside the Frederick Douglass Home, America’s Islamic Heritage Museum, and a few other nearby spots. Anise Jenkins is an American activist in the Statehood movement in the District of Columbia and serves as the executive director of Stand Up! for Democracy in DC (the original OG).

Jenkins has been recognized for her activism in relation to human rights and the promotion of democracy in the District of Columbia. The Washington Informer named Jenkins as one of the 50 most influential people in Washington, DC in 2013. She was also the recipient of a Trailblazer Award from the National Congress of Black Women in 2005, and received Human Rights Community Award from the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area.
