Daydreaming is the window seat.
Rehearsing is the driver's seat.

One lets your thoughts drift past. The other points them somewhere on purpose.

Next time your head gets busy before a big talk, notice which seat you're in.

The Psychology of Rehearsal is an ebook about the quiet science behind human conversation. Link in bio.

You said it perfectly in the shower.
Then again on the walk home.
Then once more, right before you walked in.

Nobody saw any of it. It all happened in the quiet of your own head.

These slides are from Chapter 1 of The Psychology of Rehearsal: Why We Practice Conversations in Our Heads. Link in bio.

You've probably had this conversation before. In your head.

You picture what you'll say. You guess how they'll answer. Then you try a different line.

It's not a flaw. It's your brain practicing. Almost everyone does it, from kids planning how to ask for screen time to adults getting ready for a hard talk.

A surprisingly productive question to ask yourself before rehearsing a difficult conversation:

"What am I trying to accomplish with this rehearsal?"

Depending on your answer, you might find yourself engaged in an entirely different kind of mental activity.

For instance, if you say to yourself, "I want to clarify my main point,"

you're pursuing a specific goal.

But if you find yourself saying, "I want to make sure nothing unexpected happens,"

you're engaging in an entirely different kind of rehearsal.

The difference between these two kinds of mental activity is explored in The Psychology of Rehearsal.

You just pulled in, and you’re still sitting there.

You’re not decompressing. You’re delaying the door, the phone, and the next twenty five minutes of being fine for someone. The car is the one room nobody else gets to walk into. No knocking, no small talk, no version of you required.

Tell me how long you sat there today.
