Stephen King was born on this day in 1947. For more then 40 years King has dominated geek fiction. His breakthrough as a novelist came with 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑒 (1974) and he then followed this up with 𝑆𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑚'𝑠 𝐿𝑜𝑡 (1978). There is not question, however, that King's profile has been reinforced by the range of TV and film adaptations of his work.

His novels range from one-offs to interconnected installments in elaborately conceived worlds, as is the case with 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑎𝑟𝑘 𝑇𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 series (1998-2004).

With the novella 𝑅𝑖𝑡𝑎 𝐻𝑎𝑦𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑡ℎ and 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑤𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑘 𝑅𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (1982) and the novel 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑀𝑖𝑙𝑒 (initially published in monthly installments in 1996), King has made prison a setting in which ideas of faith and goodness in cruel worlds can play out.

With 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑛 (1984), King collaborated with Peter Straub to craft an odyssey across all-American terrain and a parallel fantasy world as a boy named Jack Sawyer embarks on a quest to save his dying mother.

King's novels take the most ordinary of humans and confront them with situations perilous and wondrous, unknowable and unsettling.

Agatha Christie was born on September 15, 1890.

Agatha Christie is a rare literary figure who earned legendary status as both the "First Lady of Crime" and "Dame Commander of the British Empire," which was awarded to her by the King or Queen.

During her half century of steadfast writing, she composed over 100 novels, story collections, and plays many featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple.

The work that brought Christie to public attention was "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" (1926), about which William Rose Benet wrote, "It should go on the shelf with the books of first rank in its field. The detective story pure and simple has as definite limitations of form as the sonnet in poetry. Within these limitations, with admirable structured art, Miss Christie has genuinely achieved."

During her lifetime, Christie's books sold two billion copies-only the Bible and Shakespeare surpassed her- and they continue to sell millions of copies a year, translated into 103 languages, Yet when asked about her remarkable output, Christie simply said, "Oh, I'm an incredible sausage machine."

She died on January 12, 1976.
