Call for Short Story Submissions for our 5th annual Spooky Tales perfornance!

Theme: Haunted Photographs
Word Count: 1,000-2,500 words
Due: Sept 1, 2026

To submit, email document as attachment to [email protected]

*Please do not submit stories brainstormed, written, or edited with the use of AI*

Spooky Tales is a two-hour fully scripted storytelling event where two actors will read and perform the 6 selected short stories in front of an audience at Bridgeside Books. We are seeking those six stories!

Submit your spooky, creepy, spine-chilling short-stories that utilize photographs and photography as a central theme. We’d love to see a haunted photo album at an antique store, a camera that captures your soul, a ghostly apparition caught on camera.

Stories should be best when read aloud and offer that creepy, goosebump feeling you expect from a ghost story told around the fire. Think β€œon a dark and stormy night like tonight”.

This event is aimed at mature adult audiences, but we want to feel creeped out and unsettled, not revolted and uncomfortable. Audiences enjoy a range of tones, some humorous and others lyrical and haunting. When in doubt, just submit!

Stories will be selected by the end of September and authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by early October.

Accepted authors will receive two free tickets to Spooky Tales 2026, one for themselves and one for a companion.

Spooky Tales 2026: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24

Tickets on sale now! Head to our events page on our website BridgesideBooks.com

The many hats of Katya!

🧒 Bookstore Owner is the big hat but underneath...

She's ordering toilet paper, scheduling employees, meeting with publisher representatives, sending emails, picking stickers, picking cards, picking chocolate, picking tea, tearing down walls, organizing the back rooms, hiring and firing, changing displays, planning new events, volunteering in the community, commiserating with customers, walking her dogs, eating ice cream, picking games, picking books, picking stuffed animals, reading books, hosting author events, recommending books, refilling the dog bowl, taking out recycling, paying taxes, paying credit card fees, paying memberships, paying employees, processing used books, riding her bike, making pizza, fighting the patriarchy, crying over children's books, feeling hopeful, feeling fulfilled, feeling disappointed, waking up for the next day to do it all again!

Cheers to Katya, bookstores, small business owners, and every other hat wearer out there!

No, I don't start this reel with an f-bomb! Although it might be apropos πŸ˜‚This post is about our growing subsection of feminist dystopian novels. You probably have never heard of any of these, but you SHOULD, and that's why I'm drawing some attention to them. Wait until you hear the crazy plot parallel between A World of Women and Toxxic written over 100 years apart...

Many of these are published by the The MIT Press as part of their Radium Age series which reissues early sci-fi novels from 1900-1935 - amazing classics which might otherwise have been lost to literary history. Thanks MIT Press!

Let's talk about Middle Grade, Chapter Books, and graphic novels πŸ“š Let's build readers

First of all, kids books are for everyone. They're for reading out loud together. They're for kids. They're for adults. They're for simple joys. They're for building confidence. They're for building empathy.

Kids can read above their grade level. They can read below their grade level.

We'd rather a kid read an "easy" book than a kid read no books.

We get it. We want growth, learning, challenge! But at the end of the day, we want readers.

Remember always that one discouraging comment can close the door forever on a lifetime of reading. Let's be the ones who open that door instead.
