Be alert and aware!
🚨 PSA: South Dakota DMV is NOT texting you from a random International number!
If you just got a text from +52 786 125 4032 or similar claiming the South Dakota DMV is about to suspend your license, freeze your registration, slap you with a 35% late fee, and give you a “permanent violation record” unless you click their sketchy link…
CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve have received the “Obvious Scam of the Week” message! 🏆
Real talk:
• The actual South Dakota DMV doesn’t send urgent threats via random international numbers.
• They definitely don’t use links that look like they were generated by a tipsy raccoon typing on a broken keyboard:sd.govvqdi.makeup/dps?... (”.makeup” domain? Bold choice for a government agency.)
• Official notices don’t typically come with a deadline of the same day or that already passed.
• And “pre-trial notice” from the DMV? That’s not how any of this works.
This is a classic smishing scam (SMS + phishing). They’re hoping you’ll panic, click the link, and hand over your info like it’s Black Friday at the identity theft store.
What to do instead:
• Delete and block that number.
• If you’re actually worried about your driving record, go directly to the official South Dakota DPS website to request a copy (sd.gov/dps — no “.makeup” allowed) and call your local LE office direct with questions.
• Never click links in unsolicited texts about your license, taxes, or bank accounts. Just don’t.
Share this with your friends, family, and that one relative who still forwards chain emails. Let’s make scammers cry into their burner phones.
Stay safe out there and remember: If it sounds like the government is personally mad at you via text… it’s probably just some dude in a basement trying to steal your grandma’s Social Security number.
