When I opened the Nest in The Hathaway Creative Center I immediately felt like I had one foot in the past and one in the future.
Women who’d worked in the building when it was a factory would stop by to see the space and to reminisce about the years they’d spent there. They told me stories and shared their memories with me.
When I moved to Main St it felt very much the same, I felt the past and the future at the same time. We still have so many visitors who want to look at the vault that has been in the building since 1918 (or so) They tell us about shopping in the space when it was a dress shop, I hear stories about it when it was a hair salon and of course Judy’s Wigs.
In Belgrade it’s very much the same, but different…if that makes sense. I hear stories about generations of families coming to the lakes for their summer vacations, I see the same faces year after year and we are becoming a part of the fabric of the village.
AND now….73 KMD…we’ve had so many visitors who remember when it was a market, and a flower shop, they’ve rented apartments in the building they share their stories and their experiences with us.
One foot in the past and one in the future and although change isn’t always easy, it isn’t always understood…it is a constant and someday someone will say to the residents of each of these buildings. “I remember when” and we will have become a part of the history of each of these spaces.
The three white bricks across the top of 73 KMD???? Those represent the three Amigos Jon, Robin and Amy
We took a chance, we jumped in feet first and here we are making and becoming part of the history of Central Maine and to be honest there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
