The North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy is sharing this notice to retailers regarding the recent ban on 7-OH/Kratom products.

We would like to remind the public that we are NOT a MedSafe disposal site. While we can and will dispose of pharmaceuticals, we recommend taking these recently banned products to a take-back site.

Our good friends at Larsen Service Drug & Soda Fountain are a MedSafe disposal site, as well as McKenzie County Sheriff's Office is a Take-Back site.

For all other disposal locations in North Dakota, please see the link below to find one close to you.

Eating Times May Affect Weight

Developing two simple habits may help maintain lower weight. Researchers analyzed about 7,000 adults ages 40 to 65 and found that fasting longer overnight and eating breakfast earlier were associated with lower BMI. This means having an early dinner and an early breakfast with no eating between those two meals. The target was finishing dinner by about 7:30 or 8 p.m. and then having breakfast around 8 a.m., thereby having a consistent overnight fast of about 12 hours. They also found that skipping breakfast, even though it meant a longer fast, was not as beneficial as eating breakfast earlier.

Music & Anxiety

A new study found that when music is paired with auditory beat stimulation (ABS), people with anxiety who listened to it significantly reduced their symptoms. Researchers witnessed a link between how much time they spent listening and their mood. Participants who spent as little as 24 minutes listening experienced the strongest overall reduction in anxiety. Those who listened for only 12 minutes didn't see as much improvement. Participants also had a reduction in distress, jitteriness and irritability and experienced more emotional balance overall. Participants were already on anti-anxiety medication, so listening to ABS music might be a good adjunct therapy.

Protect Your Eyes In The Sun

Select sunglasses that provide 100% protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, often referred to as UV400. Too much exposure to UV light can raise the risk of cataracts, corneal damage and macular degeneration. Styles that wrap around your head offer extra protection on the sides. Wear a wide-brimmed hat in the sun as well as sunglasses to protect yourself from both direct sunlight above and reflected light at ground level from water, sand and even snow. Limit time in the sun during peak hours, usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clouds can allow UV rays to pass through, so protect your eyes on cloudy days, too.

Oatmeal Diet & LDL Cholesterol

A 2-day intensive diet of mostly oatmeal may help reduce LDL cholesterol, according to a new study. The sudden influx of oats changed the gut microbiome, which in turn affected how cholesterol is processed. Participants ate a diet made up almost exclusively of oatmeal (300g of oatmeal a day, 100g at each meal) for 2 days. They were allowed to supplement the oatmeal with a little fruit or vegetables. Overall, they consumed about half of their usual daily calories. The participants lost about 4 lbs., saw a slight reduction in blood pressure and had a 10% drop in LDL cholesterol. The LDL benefit lasted for 6 weeks after the diet.

Vitamin D & IBD

Vitamin D supplementation may help “reset” the body's immune system and improve gut health in those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who have low levels of vitamin D. In a recent study, researchers found that after 3 months of high-dose vitamin D (50,000 IU orally once a week), the majority of patients reported reduced symptoms and better quality of life. Analysis of blood, stool and symptoms reflected lower inflammatory markers. The vitamin D appeared to promote the growth of beneficial gut microbes. More study is needed, but those with IBD may want to talk with their doctors regarding their vitamin D blood levels and supplementation.

Fireworks Safety

Adults should always supervise any fireworks activities. Obey all local laws regarding fireworks. Read labels carefully and follow directions. Do not allow children to handle fireworks, especially sparklers. These hand-held fireworks can burn at temperatures around 1800 degrees and are the No. 1 cause of fireworks injuries to children. Make sure the launch area is open and away from homes, people and pets before lighting fireworks. Always have a hose or bucket of water nearby. Never relight a dud; wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water. When attending public displays, stay well behind safety barriers.
