A college professor lectured about the essential 18 steps involved to hand make a standard ‘straight pin’. Sewers have always tried to keep track of both pins and needles, without which no sewing gets done! There are myriad kinds of pin cushions for the task, some with the added advantage of a bag of sharp sand with which to sharpen dulled needles. Some are simply fun to see.

If you follow my personal page, you know I spent most of this week playing ‘tourist’ in NYC.
While I didn’t do a great deal of window shopping, I did spot a piece which resembled something we have at our store. I honestly think ours is more wearable.
(Theirs has the yellow background.)

Ahem. Charles, here’s what I want for Christmas: it’s carved emerald with sapphire and emerald accents. Really.

I spent the afternoon at the NY Metropolitan Museum, and enjoyed every minute. Somehow the knowledge that people centuries ago appreciated beauty even in functional items is made clearer when you see those items in person. I’m showing you small portions of a tiled wall, made up of glazed ceramic pieces no wider than 1/4”. (Frankly it would be a modern tile setters nightmare.).Also is a lovely pashmina silk rug, with a knot count tinier than the stitch counts in those purses I showed last week. I’m sure someone went blind making that.

Someone yesterday said ‘good lord, did someone do ( for you)the cards holding these buttons!’
Nope. All done in-house.
Did you know people collect buttons? I’ve always maintained that you can be ‘a historian’ simply being knowledgeable about ‘stuff’, because ‘stuff’ reflects changes in styles, manufacturing, raw goods, transportation, etc, all of which affects both their manufacture and their use.
Buttons are one way.( That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)

No color fading on this tiny gem! This one is made from small colored beads ( called ‘seed beads’ because of their size), stitched to create a small durable bouquet.
It was probably a more expensive version in its day, because the frame is sterling instead of brass, embellished to complement the floral motif. It’s quite simply ‘very pretty’.

Earlier, small but also involving a lot of hand crafting: this beaded purse has sections of hand embroidery with a small stitch count ( which I won’t attempt to count!). I’m sure its colors were more vibrant when it was new ( (1910-1925) but I actually prefer the current muted tones.

Even in the 20th century, our mothers and grandmothers had access to a tremendous amount of hand-crafted skill.
My mom had ‘best’ handbags for church and social occasions, and in between uses each was carefully put away for its next occasion. The handbag pictured has a simple design ( flat panels with a glass ‘jewel’ clasp, but is composed of careful hand stitching called ‘petit point’ because the stitches are so small.
The ‘value’ of small tapestries is influenced by the number of stitches per inch. This one has 38( or so I think without using a microscope). Aren’t you glad you weren’t the stitcher?

Pique.
It’s a strange word, and refers to finely done inlay. In all my years of collecting jewelry, this is the only example of pique I could afford. Isn’t it beautiful?
Finely worked gold and silver has been laid into a faceted wood background to make patterns
And it’s old as the hills.

Our ancestresses had a handle on surviving extreme heat. Despite fashions requiring multiple layers and tight undergarment lacing, their JEWELRY often held the key.
Glass next to the skin makes the body try to warm it to body temperature. That in turn burns calories, too. Better yet, natural stones ( which are much colder than glass) worn next to the skin accelerated the process. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself during this miserable heat wave.
