The Alchemist’s Workshop: Spell Jars
August 29, 4-5:30 pm

https://www.shelvesofaeaea.com/events/alchemists-workshop-spell-jars

Throughout history, people have gathered herbs, flowers, crystals, and symbols into small vessels as reminders of their hopes, prayers, and intentions. Whether viewed as a magical practice or a mindful ritual, a spell jar is a beautiful way to give shape to what you wish to cultivate in your life.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create your own personalized spell jar using a thoughtfully curated selection of botanicals, crystals, salts, and symbolic ingredients. We’ll explore the meaning behind common herbs, crystals, and other materials, discuss the role of intention in ritual, and guide you through crafting a jar that reflects your own purpose—whether it’s for protection, abundance, love, courage, rest, creativity, or something uniquely your own.

No experience or particular spiritual practice is necessary. Simply bring an open mind and a willingness to create something meaningful.

All materials are included, and you’ll leave with your handcrafted spell jar and a deeper appreciation for the quiet ritual of intentional making.

New Moon • August 12, 2026

The New Moon arrives in darkness, when the moon slips from view and the night sky offers us an empty canvas. Unlike the Full Moon, which illuminates what has come to fruition, the New Moon invites us into possibility. It reminds us that every beginning starts unseen.

This month’s New Moon rises in Leo—a sign associated with courage, creativity, and wholehearted self-expression. Paired with a solar eclipse, it marks a threshold: a gentle invitation to release familiar stories and make space for something new to emerge. Rather than asking us to become someone different, it encourages us to become more fully ourselves.

In nature, August carries the quiet fullness of late summer. Gardens are abundant, goldenrod begins to brighten roadsides, and the first hints of autumn can be felt in cooler mornings. The earth reminds us that growth is not rushed; it unfolds season by season.

Instead of asking, “What should I accomplish next?” perhaps ask:
What part of myself is asking to be seen?

Light a candle. Plant a seed. Begin a new journal page. Step outside after sunset and breathe into the stillness of the night.

The New Moon offers no answers—only fertile ground. What grows from here is yours to discover.

What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional vinyasa practice in which movement and breath are woven together into one continuous experience.
Each movement follows a breath. Every inhalation and exhalation has purpose—either deepening a posture or carrying us into the next. Breath becomes the rhythm of the practice, allowing the mind to remain steady from beginning to end.
Unlike many styles of yoga, Ashtanga follows a fixed sequence of postures. Rather than constantly learning something new, we return to the same sequence again and again. Familiarity creates space for depth. Instead of asking, “What’s next?” the mind is invited to explore, “What is here?”
The sequence unfolds progressively, with each posture preparing the body and mind for the next. Over time, the practice develops strength, mobility, resilience, focus, and self-awareness.
The goal is not to master postures.
The practice asks something much more meaningful: to meet yourself honestly, breathe through each experience, and return—again and again—to the present moment.

Books have always been places where ideas meet.

On these shelves you’ll find works that explore democracy, justice, equality, and the enduring pursuit of freedom. From Enlightenment philosophers to contemporary historians, journalists, and activists, each offers a different lens through which to understand our past and imagine our future.

Every person deserves dignity, equity, and the freedom to live authentically. History matters, truth deserves our attention, and an informed community is a stronger one.

That doesn’t mean every book says the same thing. It means we value the courage to read deeply, think critically, question honestly, and continue growing.

The conversations that shape a better world often begin with turning a page.

When movement is no longer something we think about, but something we experience, practice begins to feel effortless.

The breath leads.
Prāṇa moves.
The body responds.
The mind softens.

This is the beginning of yoga.

Yoga is far more than physical postures.
It is a philosophical tradition devoted to understanding the nature of ourselves and our experience of the world.

The ancient sage Patanjali described yoga as:
“Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ” — Yoga is the quieting of the fluctuations of the mind.

This reminds us that yoga is ultimately for the mind. The body is the instrument through which we cultivate awareness.

Full Buck Moon • July 29

The Full Buck Moon rises as a reminder that not all growth is immediately visible. Named for the season when young bucks quietly grow new antlers beneath soft velvet, this moon speaks to the unseen work that has been unfolding within us.

This year’s Full Moon shines in Aquarius, inviting us to honor both our individuality and our connection to the communities we call home. It asks us to reflect on what has matured, what no longer fits, and what we’re ready to release.

Instead of asking, “Who am I becoming?” perhaps ask:

What within me has already grown enough to be trusted?

Take a few moments beneath the moonlight tonight. Breathe deeply. Sip a cup of tea. Offer gratitude for this season of growth—even the parts no one else can see.

Sometimes the most meaningful transformations have been happening all along.
