So why is the face of a clock called a "dial?" It reaches back to the use of sundials – the word “dial” has its origins in the Latin word “dies,” which means "day." Since sundials needed the sun, they only worked during daylight hours, but the name stuck when mechanical clocks arrived on the scene.

Early grandfather clock movements were encased in a box that had a dial on the front. Made for hanging on a wall, these clocks contained free-hanging pendulums and weights. Cabinets were eventually made to enclose this sensitive pendulum and weights gadgetry, as the wind was often strong enough to make the clock stop.
