With the recent adoption of our new name—Museum of North Carolina Craft and History—the Board of Directors is guiding the organization through a broader shift in mission, programming, and long-term sustainability. This transition includes a renewed focus on collections stewardship, interpretive exhibitions, heritage craft education, and expanded community engagement.

As part of this strategic realignment, the Shelton Carriage House Gift Shop will not reopen for the 2026 season.

Since the museum’s founding by Mary Cornwell in 1977, during the past five decades, we have been grateful for the support of our local artists, crafters, and artisans, for the craftsmanship they have brought to our many visitors.

While this chapter is closing, our commitment to North Carolina craft endures. The Museum of North Carolina Craft and History remains dedicated to supporting makers through exhibitions, educational programs, festivals, and community partnerships. We encourage you to stay engaged with upcoming opportunities, including the Appalachian True Heritage Festival, an annual event that takes place in Waynesville and on the Shelton campus, and the MNCC&H Blue Ridge Heritage Weekend, both of which highlight regional makers and traditional skills.

The Shelton Carriage House gift shop has the most wonderful hand crafted items for sale by local artists and crafters! Hand sewn aprons by Pamela Reece make wonderful gifts and are made of durable, washable material. Come see our large array of beautiful, hand turned and crafted wooden items for kitchen and dining room by Bob Luciene, Mike McKenny, & Frank Blevins! Also, we have this endearing print offered through the Bethel Rural Community Organization on display for sale. Buy one and find a frame that works with your home decor! It’s along the lines of precious “Grandma Moses” style country charm!

The Shelton Carriage House Gift Shop is once again carrying the very popular Arlene Mills original designs in hand sewn little girls rompers and dresses during our open summer/fall season!! If you’ve got little ones or little grandies, this is the resource for “PRECIOUS”!!! gifts for your loved ones. Come on out and see for yourself! Open 10 AM to 3 PM, Thursday, Friday, & Saturday weekly. Note: Arlene is making more little dresses for us due to so many having been bought up over the past couple of weeks!

The pottery we carry in our little Carriage House Gift Shop are some of the finest pieces made by some of the finest pottery artists, a.k.a. potters, in Haywood County. You will find in our shop, Cory Plott’s functional pottery, Velda Davis’ beautiful charcoal gray pottery with the red berry design, so signatory to her style, and Susan Phillips’ whimsical pottery that exudes creativity and durability at its finest! Come on into the carriage house gift shop today - Sunday the 18th of May - we are open all day today as a result of our Historical Homes Tour event, taking place today in our local Waynesville area. Open 1 to 7 pm today. Normal hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM each week.
