With the recent adoption of our new name—Museum of North Carolina Craft and History—the Board of Directors is guiding the organization through a broader shift in mission, programming, and long-term sustainability. This transition includes a renewed focus on collections stewardship, interpretive exhibitions, heritage craft education, and expanded community engagement.
As part of this strategic realignment, the Shelton Carriage House Gift Shop will not reopen for the 2026 season.
Since the museum’s founding by Mary Cornwell in 1977, during the past five decades, we have been grateful for the support of our local artists, crafters, and artisans, for the craftsmanship they have brought to our many visitors.
While this chapter is closing, our commitment to North Carolina craft endures. The Museum of North Carolina Craft and History remains dedicated to supporting makers through exhibitions, educational programs, festivals, and community partnerships. We encourage you to stay engaged with upcoming opportunities, including the Appalachian True Heritage Festival, an annual event that takes place in Waynesville and on the Shelton campus, and the MNCC&H Blue Ridge Heritage Weekend, both of which highlight regional makers and traditional skills.
