Bird Dog Woodworks 585 is a one-man shop, owned and operated by a fellow law enforcement officer right here in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area.

There’s no production line behind these pieces. Every order comes through my hands — from the first cut and coat of paint to the engraving, assembly, and final details.

And I’m constantly improving them.

This latest Ontario County Sheriff flag is a perfect example. Each one I build teaches me something, and each new version gets a little more refined — better materials, cleaner details, sharper engraving, and new touches like the mirrored Thin Blue Line.

These aren’t just another product coming off a machine. I know what the badge represents and what a piece like this can mean to the person receiving it.

I may not always respond as quickly or complete work as fast as larger companies — and there’s a reason for that.

Every week is a balance between work, being a husband, and most importantly, being a father.

Our daughter’s SMA diagnosis came during one of the most uncertain times of our lives, and engraving became an outlet for me — something positive I could focus on and control when everything else felt out of control.

Because of that journey, Bird Dog Woodworks became more than a business.

Ten years ago, Spinal Muscular Atrophy was often considered terminal in infancy or early childhood. Today, advances in newborn screening, gene therapy, and modern medicine have dramatically changed outcomes for many children. Without that progress, our daughter would not have the chance to become the happy, determined toddler she is today.

That experience changed my perspective on time, family, and quality. I continue improving every day, often choosing better methods and materials at a greater cost to myself so customers receive a premium product while I still learn to balance time with my family.

This business was built during hardship, but it continues because of purpose, family, and the people who support it. For that, I’m grateful.
