RIP, he was tremendous!!

Renowned musician Glen Hansard has died overnight in a motorcycle crash in Dublin’s Lucan.

The Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter was killed in the single-vehicle crash near Strawberry Beds in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the collision on the R109 Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane, at 4.30am.

Gardaí confirm the man received treatment at the scene of the incident and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Hansard (56) is married to Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa and they welcomed their first child in October 2022. They split their time between Ireland and Finland.

Mr Hansard first emerged from Dublin’s legendary busking scene before forming The Frames in 1989, earning a reputation as one of Ireland’s most compelling live bands.

His international profile grew through his role in The Commitments, before worldwide acclaim arrived with the independent film Once.

Starring alongside Markéta Irglová, Mr Hansard co-wrote the Oscar-winning song Falling Slowly, launching The Swell Season onto the global stage and cementing his reputation as one of Ireland’s finest songwriters.

This year, the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter was working on his show Transmissions East and West, a powerful live presentation inspired by the communal spirit and raw energy that defined his remarkable musical journey.

Mr Hansard’s career spanned more than three decades.
