On this day in 1782, General George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, created the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration consisting of a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk, edged with a narrow binding of silver, with the word "Merit" stitched across the face in silver. That badge was only awarded to three Revolutionary war soldiers, and remained largely forgotten until 1927 General Charles P. Summerall, the U.S. Army chief of staff, sent an unsuccessful draft bill to Congress to “revive the Badge of Military Merit." In 1931, Summerall’s successor, (and Wisconsin's own) General Douglas MacArthur, hoped to reinstate the medal in time for Washington’s 200th birthday, and on On February 22, 1932, the U.S. War Department announced the creation of the “Order of the Purple Heart.” now the oldest American military decoration for military merit, which is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy. It is also awarded to soldiers who have suffered maltreatment as prisoners of war. -Remember the Heroes.

Early this morning, our long time friend Bill "Scotty" Scott, joined the love of his life Toni in heaven.

I am filled with profound sadness. But at the same time I am so honored to have known him.

As many of you were, I have been mentored by him, inspired by him, (sometimes yelled at by him), and always honored to call him a friend.

Bill had done more for the collecting hobby and inspired more collectors through his words and actions than anyone I know.

He gave of himself, in time, thoughts, words and deeds. Always a wry smile, with a "You wanna see something REALLY rare?"

I will miss you my friend, but you have become a part of all of us. ❤
