What’s “Navy Strength”? 🤔 Historically, British Royal Navy ships stored rum near gunpowder, and if any spilled, it had to be strong enough for the gunpowder to still ignite. They found 57% ABV (114 proof) was the ideal strength for firepower!

⚓️ ROARING DAN’S NAVY STRENGTH RUM IS COMING!

We’re celebrating the release of a special new expression of one of our most legendary spirits: Roaring Dan’s Rum — Navy Strength.

But what does “Navy Strength” even mean? 🤔

The term dates back to the British Royal Navy, when rum was stored alongside gunpowder aboard ships. If rum leaked and soaked into the gunpowder, it needed to be strong enough that the gunpowder could still ignite.

Through trial and error, it was determined that spirits needed to be at least 57% ABV for the gunpowder to remain combustible—establishing the standard for what we now call Navy Strength spirits.
