The Firework That Was Seen for Miles

In 1988, a team of Japanese pyrotechnicians launched one of the largest fireworks shells ever created. The massive shell weighed over 900 pounds and was designed to burst nearly half a mile above the ground. When it exploded, it created a chrysanthemum pattern stretching more than 2,600 feet across the night sky.

People from neighboring towns could see the display, and the boom echoed across the countryside. The shell was so large that it took years of planning, special launch equipment, and a reinforced mortar just to fire it safely.

Today, giant shells like these remain some of the most impressive feats in pyrotechnics, combining chemistry, engineering, and artistry into a few unforgettable seconds of light and sound.
