This is the first time the novelette and novel versions of THE END OF ETERNITY, have been published together.
In 1953, while wandering through Boston University’s library, Asimov a noticed a line drawing in a small advertisement in a volume of Time magazine from 1928. He glimpsed at something that looked like a mushroom cloud caused by nuclear explosion. It was only the Old Faithful geyser of Yellowstone National Park, and the advertisement was perfectly ordinary. From just a glimpse of an advertisement grew the idea of a story involving time travel.
In early 1954 he wrote a twenty-five thousand-word story, and submitted it to Galaxy magazine, where it was rejected. A few months later Asimov left the novelette with Walter Bradury at Doubleday and was told it was a worthwhile novel. He then faced the prospect of retelling the story at three times the length.
The protagonist works for Eternity, an organization outside of Time that alters history to minimize human suffering. Eternity prides itself on its rational, clinical mission. This journey through time is central to exploration of free will, determinism and whether a controlled future is truly better.
