Marshall Music in Lansing hosted our 5th annual Sousapalooza to celebrate Make Music Day!

The group of 33 musicians filled our auditorium with the sounds of joy, laughter, and eight different marches from John Philip Sousa. Our very own Matt Zerman -- fearless leader and conductor of the band -- reported that one young percussionist admitted this was their first time playing a march. Talk about trial by fire!

As the school year comes to a close, many young musicians contemplate if they wish to continue learning their instrument.

A gentle reminder to parents: great success awaits those who are strongly encouraged to stay in band and orchestra... or sent back to their room to practice.

CAMBRIDGE, MA—Taking a deep breath and straightening his back, Yo-Yo Ma finally worked up the courage to tell his parents that he was quitting cello, sources confirmed Friday. “Mom, Dad, this is it—I quit,” said Ma, who exhaled and then winced as his parents immediately reacted to the conseq...

From the desk of Marshall Music President and CEO, Jimmy Edwards:

"Last week I had the honor and privilege of traveling to our nations capital, as a Michigan delegate for the National Association of Music Merchants' (NAMM) annual Fly-In event. I met with the offices of many of our members of Congress to push for more funding for school music programs and professional development for our educators.

I have made this trip many times and I am always motivated and inspired by the experience. To take this issue to the highest level and to gain the attention of folks who you think have better things to do is a powerful process. My voice has been heard and I expect progress at the state level, even if that progress comes slowly.

Nearly all of the staff we met with were in band or orchestra, and many of the representatives themselves are musicians. Our platform has no party lines, just the unifying power of music, and the desire to enrich the lives of students all over America.

Our students in Michigan deserve the chance to express themselves through music as I have, and our music teachers deserve the chance to be successful. I am proud to be part of this endeavor and I am proud to represent Marshall Music."
