I was thinking recently about my friendships and how they came to be.

When I moved here from Indiana nearly 26 years ago, I didn’t know a soul. I met the mother of one of my son’s friends, and she became my first friend here. She introduced me to some of her friends, who eventually became mine, too.

But what really got me thinking was The Silver Lining.

Other than that very first friend, just about every close friendship I have today came into my life because of the store. Landlords, customers who introduced me to their wives, tenants, neighboring business owners, people I’ve met at meetings, and customers I’ve gotten to know over the years. Somehow, so many of these people have become my closest circle of friends.

I’ve always said there’s a silver lining in every situation, even the bad ones. And after 23 years of owning The Silver Lining, it hit me that the name has taken on a whole new meaning.

Being a business owner isn’t easy, and it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. There have been plenty of ups and downs, struggles with the economy, roof repairs, annoying lightbulbs, and all the other headaches that come with running a business.

But when I really think about it, the most precious thing I’ve gained from owning The Silver Lining isn’t the business itself. It’s the people.

The friendships. The connections. The people who started out as customers, neighbors, or acquaintances and somehow became so much more.

And how lucky am I to stop and recognize that? Through all the challenges and frustrations, I’ve built something that has given me so much more than a business. It’s given me a circle of people I’m incredibly grateful to have in my life.

Turns out, the greatest silver lining of all these years has been the friendships I’ve made along the way. ❤️

Samantha 🙏
