…for the few loving words had done her good, and the flowers cheered her up by their beauty.”

In Little Women, flowers are more than decorations—they are tender expressions of affection, comfort, and hope. Their beauty reminds us that even the simplest gift, when offered with love, can brighten the heart.

In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, the ocean represents freedom, distance, and the possibility of beginning again. Hester and Dimmesdale plan to escape across the sea, hoping to leave behind Puritan judgment and the burdens of their past. Yet the ocean cannot erase guilt or free Dimmesdale from his conscience. It also separates rigid New England from the wider, less restrictive world where Pearl eventually builds a new life. Like the scarlet letter itself, the ocean holds two meanings at once: hopeful liberation and uncertain exile.

George Bernard Shaw’s classic play Pygmalion is about Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert who wagers that he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower seller, into someone accepted by high society simply by changing her speech and manners.

But Eliza’s transformation raises a deeper question: once she gains confidence and independence, who gets to decide what she becomes? The play critiques class prejudice, social identity, and the idea that a person’s worth depends on accent or upbringing. It later inspired the musical My Fair Lady.

The title comes from the ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who falls in love with a statue he created.

“Having thus prepared all things as well as I was able, I set sail on the twenty-fourth day of September 1701, at six in the morning; and when I had gone about four leagues to the northward, the wind being at south-east, at six in the evening I descried a small island, about half a league to the north-west. I advanced forward, and cast anchor on the lee-side of the island, which seemed to be uninhabited. I then took some refreshment, and went to my rest. I slept well, and as I conjectured at least six hours, for I found the day broke in two hours after I awaked. It was a clear night.” — Lemuel Gulliver
