Did You Know!?...Teddy Roosevelt had many mounts throughout his life but here are some of his favorites through the years!

Little Texas was Roosevelt's mount throughout the Spanish-American War. He was famously the only horse mounted by a rough rider (Roosevelt), during the battle of San Juan Hill. During the battle Teddy had to dismount and continue on foot after Little Texas got tangled in barbed wire. But Little Texas survived the battle and the war and spent the rest of his days at Roosevelt's estate in New York.

Renown was one of Roosevelt’s personal saddle horses and was said to be highly reactive. In a letter to his children in 1919 he writes, “I am working hard to get Renown accustomed to automobiles. He is such a handful now when he meets them that I seriously mind encountering them when Mother is along.”

During his presidency Roosevelt was often seen riding his favorite mount, Bleisten. Bleisten was known for jumping over fences and obstacles. In another letter to his children he writes, “Yesterday I tried Bleistein over the hurdles at Chevy Chase (Maryland). The first one was new, high and stiff, and the old rascal never rose six inches, going slap through it.” TR was never one to give up so he finishes the letter with, “I took him at it again and he went over all right.”

Happy Feature Friday, everyone~ Tomorrow marks a year since the Enderlin EF5 Tornado, and 69 years since the Fargo EF5 Tornado of 1957. So this week, we have a photo of the aftermath of a tornado in Antler, ND back on August 20th, 1911 for you. The photo shows a barn badly damaged, and a box ripped off a wagon at the Tooke Farm. While North Dakota isn’t generally where people think of when it comes to violent tornadoes, the state has seen at minimum four EF5 tornadoes between 1950 and present day.

In 1898 Jesse Langdon was 16 years old and living in Fargo. When the news of war broke out between the U.S. and Spain over Cuba’s independence, Jesse lied about his age and joined the Minnesota infantry. The next day he saw a recruitment for a “cowboy regiment” to be “picked from the best fighting and riding…rangers of the West…chosen for their ability to ride, shoot, and fight”.

Langdon thought that sounded better than the infantry, and after it was discovered he lied about his age, he was barred from the infantry anyway. With that stroke of good luck Langdon immediately hurried off to Washington D.C. on a freight train.

He went to the recruitment headquarters and ran into Roosevelt, walking down a flight of stairs. “I told him my name,” recalled Langdon, explaining how he traveled cross-country “to enlist in the Rough Riders.”

Roosevelt said: “Can you ride a horse?”

Langdon replied: “I can ride anything that’s got hair on it!”

Roosevelt gave “one loud ‘Haw!’” and said: “Go on up the stairs. Tell them I sent you.”

So Jesse Langdon became, at age 16, the youngest of 1,060 Rough Riders. Langdon went to Cuba, then survived the famous charge up San Juan Hill, but, sadly contracted deadly yellow fever, and then malaria. But he recovered and lived to the age of 94. He passed away in 1975 and was the longest-living Rough Rider!

Happy Feature Friday, everyone~ This week we have this sheep treadmill for you. The use of treadmills to grind flour or pump water wasn’t unheard of centuries ago. While a windmill can work the same, having an animal run on the treadmill was something that could be set up inside a barn. On the other hand, it was often more limited in how much power it could output, depending on its size. Bigger models were able to work with horses or oxen, with some types being connected to generators to generate electricity.

It's that time of the week for "What is it Wednesday?"

For today's item can you identify whose signature is in the picture? And since I have the feeling you probably can, what is your guess on what document the person was signing?

I will post the answer and more pictures after the correct guess or before next weeks post!
