Most people have an N95 in a kitchen drawer from 2020 and grab it on a smoky day without thinking much more about it. That's better than nothing — but it's also where most homeowners' understanding of smoke protection stops.

Here's the part my CERT training in West Hills drilled into me: an N95 filters particulates (soot, ash, PM2.5) but it does NOT filter gases like carbon monoxide. No consumer mask does, including our own full-face respirator. Fit matters more than the rating on the box, kids can't get a proper seal on adult-sized respirators, and heavy smoke with real CO risk is an evacuation situation, not a "mask up and keep working" situation.

If you're going to be outside defending your property, a full-face respirator adds eye protection and an activated-carbon layer for odors and organic vapors that a basic particulate mask lets straight through. But know the honest limits before you rely on it.

Connecting a fire hydrant to an attack hose, gated wye valve, and Pro Nozzle should be done only by trained personnel following your department’s standard operating procedures and local authority requirements. Inspect all equipment before use, confirm the hydrant is approved for service, and make sure the area is safe.

Equipment checklist
Fire hydrant with compatible outlet and cap
Attack hose with the correct coupling
Gated wye valve with compatible inlet and outlets
Pro Nozzle
Spanner wrench and any required adapters
Appropriate personal protective equipment
Connection steps
Inspect the equipment. Check the hydrant outlet, hose couplings, gated wye valve, nozzle, gaskets, and threads for damage, dirt, or missing parts. Confirm that every connection is compatible and rated for the intended pressure.
Position the equipment. Place the gated wye valve where it can be operated safely and where the hose will not be sharply kinked, pinched, or exposed to vehicle traffic. Keep the Pro Nozzle pointed in a safe direction.
Connect the attack hose to the gated wye valve. Make sure the gasket is seated, align the couplings by hand, and tighten them with the appropriate wrench without cross-threading or over-tightening.
Connect the Pro Nozzle. Attach the Pro Nozzle to the attack-hose outlet or the selected gated-wye outlet, depending on your setup. Verify that the nozzle is secure and that its control is in the closed position before charging the line.
Connect the supply side to the hydrant. Attach the gated wye valve or the supply hose assembly to the hydrant outlet specified by your operating procedure. Confirm that the connection is fully seated and supported.
Charge the line slowly. Communicate with the nozzle operator, clear the area, and open the hydrant gradually to reduce water hammer. Watch every coupling for leaks, and stop if a connection shifts or fails.
Flush and operate safely. Once the line is stable, open the gated wye and Pro Nozzle according to your department’s procedure. Maintain control of the hose, monitor pressure, and never stand over a coupling or in front of a nozzle.
After use

Close the nozzle and gated wye as directed, shut down the hydrant gradually, relieve pressure before disconnecting, drain and inspect the hose, and report any damaged equipment for service.

If you're already doing the Zone 0 defensible-space work on your property, here's something worth knowing: it may already be earning you a homeowners insurance discount.

California's "Safer from Wildfires" regulation requires insurers to give policyholders credit for specific mitigation work, and the 5-foot clearance zone around your home is one of the categories that qualifies. You don't have to wait for Zone 0 to become official law to start claiming that benefit.

Just as important: none of this covers active defense. Defensible space keeps a fire from starting at your house in the first place. If embers are already landing and there's still time to act safely, that's a different job entirely, and it's the one a hydrant valve, hose, wrench, and nozzle are built for.

Like a lot of people in fire-prone neighborhoods, I always assumed the fire hydrant on my street was off-limits to anyone but the fire department.

After the Woolsey Fire burned less than a few miles from my home in West Hills, I joined my local CERT program to actually learn what homeowners can and can't do when a wildfire is bearing down. Turns out — in many jurisdictions, homeowners are legally allowed to use the hydrant in front of their own house, if they have the right equipment and know how to use it safely.

That single fact is the reason Ace Fire Defense exists. Fire crews get stretched thin during a fast-moving wildfire, and sometimes structure protection comes down to whoever gets there first. A garden hose isn't built for that job — a charged hydrant is, but only with the right valve, hose, and nozzle.
