A special thank you and shout out to author Tom Mainwaring for kicking off our Dinner & Speaker Series with a discussion of his book “Abandoned Tracks,” the Underground Railroad and an accurate account of West Middletown’s role on the freedom trail and Chef Marsha at Marsha Cassel's Kitchen on Main for hosting and providing a delicious dinner for the event. Join the WMHRC as we welcome Washington & Jefferson professor emeritus and local author W. Thomas Mainwaring for a discussion of the Underground Railroad and its place in Washington county. Through his critically acclaimed book "Abandoned Tracks", W. Thomas Mainwaring bridges the gap between academic and popular perceptions of the Underground Railroad. His presentation will serve to separate fact from fiction in and around West Middletown, while also putting our region in the national context. The Underground Railroad had distinct regional variations. Washington County had a well-organized abolition movement. Its origins as a slave county make it an interesting case study of the transition from slavery to freedom and of the origins of black and white abolitionism. Spend an evening engaged in the debate about the extent, scope, and nature of the Underground Railroad. The presentation is designed for those curious about abolitionism and the Underground Railroad as well those interested in our local history.

Poor Johnny’s would like to thank all of our friends, neighbors and customers who answered the call (or in this case filled the donation boot) that allowed us to purchase the materials and construct a new outdoor sign for the borough’s volunteer fire department. A special shout out to our friend Joe B. for his time and expertise in the building and installation. The boot is stationed behind the coffee bar in the store and any donation - large or small - is always appreciated. Our first responders rely heavily on the support of the community to fund the services it provides for us daily. Thanks to all again, we appreciate it!
