The Parable of the President’s Club RepA highly successful Account Executive worked at a mid-market cybersecurity firm. He had a solid territory, hit his number every quarter, and consistently made the company’s "President’s Club" incentive trip. However, over time, he grew restless. He looked at LinkedIn and saw former colleagues posting about massive Series B startups. They were bragging about double the base salary, "uncapped" commissions, and cutting-edge AI features. His own company started to feel boring, slow, and outdated. The grass on the other side looked vibrant green.Determined to catch the wave, he resigned and signed an offer with a hyper-growth tech startup. His base salary jumped 30%.On his first day, the reality of the new pasture set in.Yes, the product was flashy, but it was highly unstable and filled with bugs. The "uncapped commission" structure was hidden behind a shifting comp plan that made it nearly impossible to actually hit quota. Because the startup had hired fifty new reps at once, his territory was carved down to a fraction of its original size. He went from being a respected veteran to an anonymous number in a high-churn boiler room. Worse, the marketing engine was broken. He was spending 80% of his day hunting for his own leads through broken databases, instead of doing what he loved: closing deals.Frustrated, he grabbed a coffee with his old sales mentor and complained about the chaos. The mentor took a napkin and drew two fields divided by a fence. "In sales, we always look over the fence," the mentor said. "We see the high valuations and the flashy tech. But you forgot the most basic rule of farming.""What’s that?" the rep asked."The grass is always greener where it is watered," the mentor said. "At your old job, you had a watered field. You had strong product-market fit, a reliable engineering team, a clean database, and a brand customers trusted. You took the watering for granted because you were staring at the neighbor's fertilizer. "The mentor looked at him. "Every company has mud. At your old job, the mud was just a slow product roadmap. Here, the mud is a broken culture and no pipeline. You don't need a greener field. You need to look at the field you are standing in and ask if you are willing to do the watering. "The rep realized he had traded a stable, fertile environment for a mirage of quick success. He eventually moved on, but he never again mistook a flashy billboard for a healthy territory.

Don’t say something you regret out of anger

“There once was a little boy who had a very bad temper. His father decided to hand him a bag of nails and said that every time the boy lost his temper, he had to hammer a nail into the fence.

On the first day, the boy hammered 37 nails into that fence.

The boy gradually began to control his temper over the next few weeks, and the number of nails he was hammering into the fence slowly decreased. He discovered it was easier to control his temper than to hammer those nails into the fence.

Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father the news and the father suggested that the boy should now pull out a nail every day he kept his temper under control.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

‘You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.

Laziness won’t get you anywhere

“In ancient times, a king had his men place a boulder on a roadway. He then hid in the bushes, and watched to see if anyone would move the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers passed by and simply walked around it.

Many people blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone removed.

One day, a peasant came along carrying vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the way. After much pushing and straining, he finally managed.

After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and note from the King explain that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the road.”
