How to Release Yourself from Your Past
We all make mistakes in life, some of which can be minor while others can have a significant impact on our lives. These mistakes can leave us feeling guilty, ashamed, and stuck in the past. However, it's important to remember that mistakes are a natural part of life and can serve as valuable learning experiences. Sis, don’t get stuck in guilt and shame, and allow the enemy to paralyze you in your present by keeping you focused on the mistakes of your past.
Here are five scriptures to help you release yourself from your past so you can focus on your future.
1. Philippians 3:13-14: "But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." This verse reminds us that we should not dwell on the mistakes of our past, but instead focus on moving forward toward our goals.
2. Psalm 103:12: "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." This verse reassures us that God forgives our sins and removes them from us completely.
3. Isaiah 43:18-19: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." This verse reminds us that God can make something new and beautiful out of our past mistakes.
4. Romans 8:1: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." This verse offers comfort by reminding us that we are not condemned for our past mistakes if we have faith in Jesus.
5. 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." This verse encourages us to confess our mistakes to God and trust in His forgiveness and purification.
As the saying goes, we cannot change the past, but we can reshape the future. It just depends on the decision that you’re going to make today. The best way to do that is to experience God’s forgiveness. Jesus himself said, *"If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed." (John 8:36)*
Be intentional in extending grace and kindness to yourself. Free yourself from any feelings of condemnation. Be open to opportunities to love and be loved. Be compassionate towards yourself as you are with others. It may not be an easy journey, you might find yourself struggling in the process of letting go, but just hang in there *"for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…" (Proverbs 24:16, NIV)*
