We’re feeling very but also quite with the volume of donations lately! So we’re taking a pause for the rest of the month. Any pre-existing appointments will be kept. The scheduling app on the website is open for September, so you can plan ahead and schedule a time to drop off next month: https://www.pastandfuturecraft.com/destash

If you can’t wait until then, you can try your local Buy Nothing group or take a drive and check out a neighboring creative reuse center. Check out https://www.sewingthroughfog.com/thriftyourfabric for a map of creative reuse centers.

Usually during busy donation months I’d be coming in on my weekends to keep up, but this month that isn’t an option. A family member up north is getting ready to move, and my organizing/wrangling skills are needed there. Thanks for understanding 🤍

For the week of July 23 - 26 we will not be accepting donations. Volunteer day is cancelled on July 24. Jo is traveling to Washington for a family reunion and Tucker is covering the shop.

Meet Tucker! He’s my long-term partner, and the reason I moved to Maine 11 years ago.

He’s just about the handiest fellow you can imagine - anything mechanical, he can figure out how to fix it or build it. His work experience includes 5 years at the Portland Gear Hub where he worked as a bike mechanic and designed and built out the space as their operations manager. He also spent several years at a solar panel factory where he developed workflow processes, and he’s spent the last few years renovating his mother’s rental properties in Farmington.

At Past + Future, he’s helped with everything from building and installing furniture, to repairing sewing machines, to designing a special yarn oven for sanitizing wool donations (and soon, a device for removing odors from materials!) Past + Future absolutely would not be what it is today without his help. You could say that Past + Future is a mom + pop shop (without the kids..)

You might remember that we closed the shop for 2 weeks last July for our wedding - I’ll be out of town and he’ll be filling in for me for both our anniversary and his birthday. Fortunately, we have the best customers in the world, so I know everyone will be nice and he’s going to have a good time! Right, guys??

Whether you live nearby and you’re looking for a fun day trip, or you’re coming from further away, there are lots of great reasons to visit Westbrook this summer! I might have to make a second roundup since I kept thinking of more places while putting this together. What are some of your favorite Westbrook spots?

📚 BOOKS! BOOKS!! BOOKS!!! 📚

The book shelves just got a big refresh, thanks to a large donation that came in last week. Norm generously gifted us his late wife’s collection of quilting and crafting books. She was interested in contemporary quilts, art quilts, “crazy” quilts, the history of quilting, and quilting traditions in other countries. You can tell she had a scholarly interest in the craft. We took the opportunity to organize the shelves to make it easier to find what you’re looking for. Come peruse!

We will be open as usual this weekend, 10am-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. I was planning to close the shop for Independence Day, but all I feel like doing is sewing and it’s way too hot in my apartment for that. So I’ll keep cool at the shop with the AC on - I hope some of you will stop by!

2+3. Last week, Heather from dropped off a large donation of fabric yardage and scraps, what was left after she closed up shop in December. Denim, linen, organic cotton, corduroy - really gorgeous stuff. Thank you so much, Heather, and I can’t wait to see what you get up to next 🤍👒🌷
4. A vintage beading loom that came in today. So cool!
5. BIG BUNDLE RESTOCK - thanks to our awesome Friday morning volunteers, we have lots of fresh quilt bundles to dig through!
6. Scrappy yarn baggies, matched up with complimentary fibers, weights, and colors, and very reasonably priced.
7. Hefty metal zippers 🤐
8. Big worm restock! (I’m told that’s what rug hookers call wool strips 🪱)
9. A calculator for quilt makers, including an instructional CD.
10. A lovely quilt in progress. Comes with lots more pieces that aren’t pictured here.

Stay cool out there! I’ll be right here if you decide to stop by 🌞

What’s new? Thanks for asking!

1. Lots and lots of blanket weight acrylic yarn!
2. Want to try tatting? We’ve got what you need!
3. We are now selling large single needles, just 25 cents each. Don’t let it’s spiky appearance scare you away 🦔🐡
4. Gorgeous fiber for spinning! 🐑 🐇 🐐
5. Maggie tells me these are the best pillow inserts ever. She dropped off heaps of 16x16 inches and 18x18 inches. Thank you Maggie!
6. Sweet kids print flannels, perfect for baby quilts or pjs.
7. Two Quince Quarterly kits, linen and cotton for spring and summer knitting.
8. Handmade piping for upholstery, bag making, whatever you’re making that could use some structure.
9. Plenty of large cuts of wool fabric (as always, wool has been heat treated for the safety of your stash! 🐛🙅‍♀️)
10. Something that made me lol 🙂
