For the past week, The Millennium Road has been on the road.

In light of being fully vaccinated, I decided to do something I haven’t done in a long time: take a road trip to visit some great friends up and down the east coast.

It’s the first time I’ve traveled in over 14 months, and this week also marks six months of The Millennium Road. Seemed like a good time to do something special!

The trip started at my home in Westchester, NY. So far, I’ve stopped in five cities on the east coast and plan on stopping in several more on my way back home. A huge plus of the trip: the weather has been absolutely gorgeous every single day.

Needless to say, I couldn’t help but bring some bar tools with me. This picture was taken right outside the Braves stadium in Atlanta, GA. Thanks to the for providing such a great photo opportunity.

Also, a special thank you to all who have shown me such wonderful hospitality so far. I hope I can return the favor one day!

Cheers.

Evan

My personal favorite cocktail, the Old Fashioned is one of the oldest recorded cocktails from the United States. Its recipe dates to the early 1800s, however, at that time it wasn’t called an Old Fashioned.

In May of 1806, a New York based newspaper wrote an article in which it used the word ā€˜cocktail’ - one of the earliest recorded uses of the word.

Subsequently, a curious reader who had never heard of this word wrote a letter to the editor asking him to define ā€˜cocktail’. In the next week’s edition of the paper, the editor defined ā€˜cocktail’ as the following:

ā€œA potent concoction of spirits, sugar, water and bittersā€.

Now, if you’re making this ā€˜cocktail’ and the spirit you’re using is whiskey, this is the exact recipe for an Old Fashioned! While other spirits were used as a base for ā€˜cocktails’, it should come as no surprise that the most popular spirit for ā€˜cocktails’ in the early-mid 1800s was whiskey.

So where did the name Old Fashioned come from?

Around the mid-1800s ā€˜cocktails’ began to become more elaborate. To keep up with demand, bartenders started incorporating new ingredients and flavors into their ā€˜cocktails’. Bar-goers who’s tastes were more aligned with the original ā€˜cocktail’ began asking their bartenders for something a little simpler, something a little more ā€˜old fashioned’. Over the ensuing years and decades, the name stuck and remains the same to this very day.

To me, an Old Fashioned represents so much more than just a cocktail: it represents over 200 years of history that has been tried, tested and preserved by bartenders and mixologists alike.

What’s the story behind your favorite cocktail?

Cheers! 🄃

To say it’s tough starting a business from scratch would be an understatement. Starting a business from scratch, at home during a global pandemic... even tougher. However, I didn’t do this because I thought it would be easy.

While we have a small team here at The Millennium Road, a large majority of our activity is carried out by me - Evan.

Whether it’s posting on social media, developing website content, performing market research, inspecting product inventory or packing up orders - I’ve been wearing a lot of hats and have been learning a lot on the fly.

These past 5+ months have provided me with an experience I’ll never forget. From the successes I’ve had, the mistakes I’ve made that have led to learning, the support I’ve received from friends and family, to my new friends I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know along the way.

I have a lot of work in front of me, but I can’t thank everyone enough who has supported me and The Millennium Road thus far. Can’t tell you how much it means to me.šŸ™

I look forward to sharing more personal content about my journey starting and running (attempting to anyway) this business.

Big things have small beginnings, and I’m just getting started.

Cheers! šŸ„‚

It’s been a very busy few weeks here at The Millennium Road, and we’re extremely excited to make another big announcement and update to our business.

Now, we’re offering Virtual Mixology Classes, hosted by our founder and professional mixologist, Evan Prish.

Since we started The Millennium Road at the end of last year our goal has been not just to offer the highest quality bar products we could get our hands on, but to also help teach people about mixology and craft cocktails.

With this latest update, we’re taking bigger strides to do just that.

Evan teaches engaging classes about the history and crucial foundations of mixology, origins of cocktails, fundamentals of spirits and more.

A typical class looks like this…

- 60-75 minutes long
- Involves active demonstrations of 2 cocktails
- Engages spirited conversation throughout
- Ends with a Q&A

For more information, prices and to book a class, tap the email button in our profile or send us a DM.

We’ll see you in class! šŸ’» šŸŽ

Been having a lot of fun lately with this wonderful book - the very first American cocktail recipe book written by the first American mixologist, Jerry ā€œThe Professorā€ Thomas, in 1862. In the middle of the civil war, this dude was whipping up cocktails like there was no tomorrow.

Many of the cocktails and recipes in this book are products of the time in which it was written; however, many are cocktails that we still know and love today. Recipes for Juleps, Sours, Smashs, Toddies and more can all be found in this book, as well as ā€˜The Cocktail’ - an archaic precursor to the modern Old Fashioned.

Jerry Thomas wasn’t just a bartender - he was an artist who transformed the profession of making drinks into the creative art form which today we know as mixology.

He introduced new ingredients to cocktails that had never been thought of before. He encrusted jewels into his bar tools to create a sense of luxury and class. He would juggle bottles, barware, glasses and lit some of his drinks on fire - developing entertaining practices that dazzled his patrons. To say he was ahead of his time would be an understatement.

Most important of all, however, he emphasized using high quality ingredients and following proper recipes - the two most important aspects of mixology.

We can all thank Thomas for creating and popularizing many of the cocktails we know and love today. I highly encourage you to check out this book if you have the chance: Jerry Thomas’s Bartenders Guide (1862). It’s a must read for any cocktail enthusiast or aspiring mixologist.

Happy !

To observe this holiday properly, we whipped up a special variation to this iconic cocktail: a spicy-smokey marg using jalapeƱo slices and mezcal.

Everyone’s favorite party drink, the Margarita has been one of the most popular cocktails in the world for decades. Its recipe was featured in Esquire magazine as early as 1953. Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffet loved margaritas so much, he dedicated a song and a chain of restaurants to them! Sweet, sour and salty, this cocktail offers a variety of different flavors that have contributed to its immense popularity.

For this variation, the addition of mezcal and jalapeƱo slices provide extra layers of complexity to the cocktail. Mezcal adds subtly smokey undertones and the jalapeƱo provides an enjoyable kick. Overall, the cocktail is a delight to the senses on just about every level!

While tequila is made only from the agave tequilana plant, commonly know as blue agave, mezcal can be made from any type of agave plant, of which there are many different species. During mezcal production, the agave plants are harvested and cooked in underground oven pits, which gives mezcal its unique smokey flavor.

Here’s the recipe:

🟢 1 1/2 oz reposado tequila
🟢 1/2 oz mezcal
🟢 3/4 oz Cointreau
🟢 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
🟢 1/2 oz blue agave nectar
🟢 1-3 jalapeño slices (1 for mild, 2 for medium, 3 for hot)
🟢 kosher salt

Directions: Combine all ingredients in shaker. Shake vigorously and double strain over ice into a rocks glass. For salt on the rim - take a lime wedge and run the citrus side around the full rim of the glass. Lightly spread some kosher salt on a small plate. Take the glass and gently place it rim side down on the plate of salt and move the rim around the plate until the rim is sufficiently covered in salt.

How are you ā€˜observing’ national margarita day?
